The main advantage of Quadra-Drive is that the integrated transfer case and the differential with progressive locking on each axle enable automatic steering of all four wheels. However, only cter differential can be locked and only 4Lo. The Quadra-Trac II system includes the NV247 transfer case with standard front and rear differentials.
The WJ’s 45RFE and 545RFE automatic transmissions were outstanding. It features three planetary gears instead of the two normally used in four-speed automatics. This gave six theoretical speeds and would be the first mass-produced six-speed transmission, but only five of these ratios were planned. Four are used for the climb, with another second gear for the descent. Although a five-to-six ratio was used, Chrysler chose to call it a “4-speed automatic”. In 2001, a program was developed and used all six indicators. Instead of a six-speed gearbox, the gearbox functions as a five-speed with the second gear displaced. 70 mph (113 km/h) on 545RFE at 2,000 rpm, 200 rpm less than programming 45RFE. In 1999 and 2000, WJ owners were able to flash the 45RFE transmission and provide an additional transmission as both transmissions are physically identical. The 42RE retains the Inline 6 Gine 4-speed automatic transmission. It has few changes from the previous Grand Cherokee model.
The interior has also been completely redesigned. The redesign allows for larger rear doors and more room for rear passengers.
