2014 Jeep Cherokee Latitude 4×4 Suv
2014 Jeep Cherokee Latitude 4×4 Suv – It’s winter here in the Northeast, and last week’s Polar Vortex was lucky enough to show up when our weekend test vehicle was a 2014 Jeep Cherokee.
It’s a new compact crossover that replaces an older pickup truck like the Jeep Liberty, sitting alongside popular compact crossover utility vehicles like the Chevy Equinox, Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Santa Fe Sport and Toyota RAV4 . .

After the introduction of the Dodge Dart in 2013, this is the second new Fiat Chrysler vehicle to use a front-wheel drive chassis taken from the Italian brands Fiat and Alfa Romeo.

However, the 2014 Cherokee has a new all-wheel drive system designed to maximize fuel economy while providing all the power and off-road capability Jeep is known for.
This time, we can say that the Jeep plowed through between 4-6 inches of snow using the “Snow” setting on the SelecTerrain all-wheel drive control knob and navigated our steep, unpaved road without drama or noise.
Having recently spent time in two different versions of the new Ford Escape, as well as several luxury diesel crossovers, we were eager to test drive the new Cherokee.
However, the version we received was the top model, equipped with a 271-horsepower 3.2-liter Pentastar V-6 rather than the base 2.4-liter engine.

The EPA website lists at least eight combinations of engine, drivetrain and four-wheel drive technology for the new Cherokee. All are equipped with a new nine-speed automatic gearbox.
Cherokee models range from a top 25 mpg combined with the front-wheel-drive model with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine to a low 20 mpg combined with the Cherokee Trailhawk 4WD and 3.2-liter V-6.
In our test drive of about 268 miles, two-thirds highway and one-third stop-and-go suburban driving, we averaged 23.8 mpg as indicated on the dash.
We suspect the nine-speed automatic will do best on the highway when we see the engine cruising at 1,500 rpm or less. With the engine idling even under heavy load, we occasionally heard a low whirring sound, known as “loading”.

We know 20 to 25 mph doesn’t sound like much to many readers, but that’s 30 to 45 percent better than the fuel economy numbers posted by the old Jeep Liberty, and the new Cherokee is a better car.
Overall, we were more impressed than we expected to be with the 2014 Jeep Cherokee. It’s comfortable, snow-able and incredibly refined.
Front styling is a matter of taste, of course, but it’s another car that’s modern, if not Jeep-like in our eyes. Or as one passenger put it: “It’s like the Japanese – is that good or bad?”
Our 2014 Jeep Cherokee Limited 4×4 had a base price of $29,995 and included four option packages including the customer-pleasing 26G package.

The $2,155 technology package includes blind-spot and cross-traffic detection, parallel and perpendicular park assist, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and automatic high beams.
The Luxury Group, $1,595, added ventilated leather seats up front; power-operated lift gate; driver’s seat memory, exterior mirrors and radio; and high-intensity discharge (HID) headlights, which were the best.
The 271-horsepower 3.2-liter V-6 was $1,495 extra, but it came with dual chrome exhaust tips.
For $795, the Uconnect plan adds navigation, HD Radio, SiriusXM satellite traffic and TravelLink data, and a one-year subscription to Sirius and Uconnect Access.

The front has a waterfall cover with a seven-hole grid that includes a clear, horizontal hook? a feature on many classic Jeeps. The hood is clearly defined and separated from the front fenders in a modern nod to Jeep heritage. A single hood and grille assembly ensures a precise fit. Advanced LED lighting technology is used in the new 2014 Jeep Cherokee. The front lighting has a very different daytime running light shape that controls the new front aspect ratio and gives the impression of a smaller headlight. A well-hidden projector lamp is hidden under the DRLs, next to the black fascia. The DRLs are positioned high to allow water to pass through. The front end of the new 2014 Jeep Cherokee flows visually throughout the vehicle with interlocking windows from the windshield to the taillights.
The sides of the Cherokee project fluid tension in the surface finish, highlighted by Jeep’s trapezoidal arches. The Daytime Running Light (DLO)’s rich chrome look and feel are closely related to the Jeep Grand Cherokee, creating a cohesive Jeep line. Two open-air sunroof options are offered: the CommandView dual-panel sunroof, available for the first time on a midsize SUV, and the factory-exclusive SkySlider open-air sunroof.
