24 Hour Fitness has filed for bankruptcy and will close more than 130 locations across California, Texas and several other states.

The gym chain, which has more than 300 locations across the country, said it has been hit by the coronavirus pandemic.

“If not for COVID-19 and its consequences, we would not have filed for Chapter 11,” CEO Tony Ueber said in a news release. “That being said, we intend to use the process to strengthen the future of 24 Hour Fitness for our team and club members, as well as our partners.”
24 Hour Fitness is not going out of business, and is gradually opening its remaining clubs, most of which are expected to reopen by the end of June. The company also announced that members are welcome to work at 24 Hour Fitness locations that are open throughout 2020.

Clubs will reopen with health and safety measures in place, including a “new sports booking system and contactless club registration” as well as “cleaning and distancing protocols social,” the company said.

The states with the most 24 Hour Fitness closings include California and Texas, but several other states, including New York and Colorado, will also see many closings.
