San Diego’s top five airlines, by market share, are Southwest Airlines (39.2%), United Airlines (15.1%), Delta Air Lines (11.2%), Alaska Airlines (12.5%) and American Airlines (8.2%) .

Landing at the airport from the east side offers the closest views of the skyscrapers, Petco Park (home of the San Diego Padres), and the Coronado Bridge from the left side of the plane. On the right, Balboa Park, the site of the Panama-California Exposition of 1915-1916, can be seen, along with the San Diego Zoo.
The approach from the east is steeper than most as the terrain drops from 266 feet (81 m) to sea level in less than a nautical mile. San Diego’s only landing is west of a hill with various obstacles, including Interstate 5 and trees in Balboa Park. Contrary to local tradition, the end-of-lane parking structure was built in the 1980s long after the previous barriers were built east of I-5 and does not affect access.

Flying Alaska Airlines In First Class From San Diego To Maui
Allegiant will soon launch nonstop service to Provo, Utah from San Diego. No other airline currently offers service between the two cities.
Allegiant Air, which will debut the flight in August, has been rapidly expanding its flights from San Diego, with several new destinations added in the past year.
In the continued expansion of its service from San Diego, Allegiant Air announced it will add a year-round nonstop flight to Provo, Utah, beginning August 18.
The new flight will operate twice weekly, on Thursdays and Sundays, and will mark the first nonstop service to Utah destinations from San Diego International Airport.

“We welcome this new route between our two cities on Allegiant Air,” said Kimberly Becker, President and CEO of the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority. “For Southern California travelers looking for an alternative to the greater Salt Lake City area, Provo serves as a gateway to many of the state’s top attractions and recreation activities. We appreciate Allegiant Air’s continued investment and new routes in the SAN.”
Located 45 miles south of Salt Lake City, the city has easy access to national parks, canyons, and ski resorts, and the surrounding area is popular for vacationers interested in hiking, fishing, water sports, and camping.
Austin, Texas and Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The Austin flight began last month and the Sioux Falls seasonal service begins May 19 and ends August 12.
With the addition of the new Provo route, Allegiant now offers nonstop service to 12 destinations, making the airline the third-most routes out of San Diego.

A Swoop Airlines 737 arrives at San Diego International Airport on its inaugural nonstop flight from Edmonton on Sunday.
Canadian airline Swoop launched nonstop service on Sunday between San Diego and Edmonton, a boost to the region’s tourism-dependent economy and evidence that international travel is picking up after a dip during the pandemic.
Sunday’s mid-morning flight from Edmonton to San Diego marked the first time nonstop service was available between the two cities. It’s also the first time San Diego International Airport has welcomed a new airline since 2018.

Swoop’s arrival follows the resumption of British Airways service to San Diego in October and the reactivation of Japan Airlines service to San Diego in March.
Airport officials said Sunday that the number of international flights to and from San Diego has increased by 25 percent from pre-pandemic levels. But they said international passenger numbers were still down 90 percent because flights were significantly less crowded.
While San Diego’s tourism economy relies on travelers from around the world, Canada is the region’s No. 1 source for international visitors.
In 2019, San Diego welcomed about 350,000 Canadian visitors, resulting in an estimated $183 million economic impact on the region, according to the San Diego Tourism Authority.

Air Canada has resumed nonstop service between San Diego and Vancouver, but not nonstop service between Toronto and San Diego. Westjet offers nonstop service between San Diego and Calgary.
“In San Diego, our priority is to find new air service routes,” said Kimberly Becker, executive director of the local airport authority. “We anticipate this route will be popular with even more Canadians wanting to enjoy our sunny shores and San Diegans looking for a great winter getaway in the beautiful Canadian Rockies.”
Swoop, a 3-year-old low-cost carrier that has never flown to a California destination before, will begin service between San Diego and Edmonton with one flight in each direction on Sundays only.
Spokeswoman Kelsey Trainor said the airline plans to expand service to Thursdays in December and add Tuesdays next year.
Southwest Airlines Cancels Hundreds Of San Diego Flights
“There’s a lot of optimism,” Trainor said just after the first Swoop flight from Edmonton arrived. “San Diego is obviously a wonderful market for Edmontonians.”
Swoop announced plans in 2019 to launch service between San Diego and Edmonton, but that was delayed by the grounding of some Boeing planes for safety evaluations and then by the pandemic, Trainor said.
Among the passengers on Sunday’s inaugural flight was Carlin Getz, a former San Diego resident living in Canada who is visiting this week to celebrate his mother’s 70th birthday.
He said the nonstop flight makes the trip shorter and more enjoyable, adding that he had to make a connection in Denver or Seattle, or fly to Los Angeles and rent a car. On some of these trips, she traveled with her three children.

“When you’re flying with kids, it’s nice not to have a layover,” she said just outside Gate 50 in Terminal 2. “And it allows me to get here faster and spend more time with family.”
The flight happened shortly after 11:15 a.m. m., and the pink and white jet taxied to the departure gate a few minutes later. Some baggage handlers recorded videos on their phones to commemorate San Diego’s first nonstop flight from Edmonton.
The city is the capital of the province of Alberta. With 1.3 million people, it is the sixth largest metropolitan area in Canada.
Bert van der Stege, Swoop’s chief commercial and financial officer, said late October is a common time for airlines to make schedule changes as they transition from summer to winter service.

“We look for destinations where the sun shines and the temperatures are a little better than what we have in Edmonton,” he said. The average temperature in Edmonton in November is 24 degrees, according to climate-data.org; It’s 61 degrees in San Diego.
Airport officials said one obstacle to recovering international travel is confusion over vaccination requirements and COVID-19 testing rules, which vary by destination. The airport authority maintains a blog at san.org that purports to summarize these rules and conditions.
