San Diego International Airport, also known as Lindbergh Field, is a public airport located 3 miles (4.8 km) northwest of downtown San Diego, California. It is the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority.

The eastern entrance is steeper than most, as the terrain drops 266 feet (81 meters) to sea level in less than a nautical mile. San Diego’s only runway is west of a hill with several obstacles, including Interstate 5 and the trees of Balboa Park. Contrary to local lore, the parking structure at the end of the runway was built in the 1980s after the previous barriers on the eastbound side of I-5 were erected and did not affect the method.

Planes don’t land at the end of the runway like at most airports, but on an empty threshold. The evacuation threshold for a 27-foot runway is 1,810 feet and the evacuation threshold for a 9-foot runway is 700 feet.
SANs are located in densely populated areas. A curfew was introduced in 1979 to quell noise and disputes among airport neighbors. Flights are allowed between 6:30am and 11:30pm. Driving outside these hours is heavily fined. Access is allowed 24 hours a day.

I love flying out of San Diego International Airport (most of the time). Getting out of bed at 3am for a 6am flight is no fun, but flying out of Terminal 1 is pretty badass.
The Soroh peak is due to the 6am flight from T1, but my flight wasn’t scheduled to leave until 10am, so it wasn’t too bad this morning. So with everything half-baked, I tried to focus on the positives as I walked in and waited for security.

O. Terminal 1. It’s gotten repetitive over the last year or so, but it’s definitely more fun to start a trip report with a picture of Terminal 2’s exterior.
This old building has some really cute design details, but that doesn’t stop it from being a lot of fun.

Unfortunately, it’s really hard to waste time before going through security at Terminal 1. Looking to board the flight will eat up a minute or two, which won’t help me much since the flight won’t start for another hour.
Well, that’s it. I’m off guard now and those climbers have a Ring of Death. Do I get “good luck”?
I timed my arrival at the airport so that I don’t spend much time waiting before the flight. There’s nothing to do here in Terminal 1 (“Circle of Death” sounds better?), so good luck finding a place to sit back and relax.
The airport is overcrowded most of the day thanks to Alaska Airlines and the very aggressive growth of San Diego over the last few years. They have pushed Terminal 1 to the limit and will soon be better off moving east to Terminal 2.
