Amtrak Boston To New Orleans – CHICAGO — New Amtrak locomotives — built in the U.S. and cleaner, faster and more fuel-efficient than their predecessors — began service today hauling the famous Amtrak Empire Builder
Train west from Chicago to Seattle. Locomotives 301 and 302 are among the first of 75 locomotives to be delivered by 2024.

A key part of Amtrak’s sustainability initiative, these ALC-42 locomotives are significantly greener than their 1990 predecessors. They reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by more than 89 percent and particulate emissions by 95 percent, use less fuel from decommissioned locomotives and have a higher top speed of 125 mph.

“We take our commitment to sustainability seriously at Amtrak. “We are focused on being the solution to getting people from cars and planes to rails while further reducing emissions,” said George Hull, Amtrak’s vice president and chief mechanical officer, at a brief ceremony at Chicago’s Union Station.
“Although rail represents only a small portion of emissions nationwide, we want to take these steps to be the cleanest passenger railroad operating diesel trains in North America, whether it’s commuting or long distances,” Hull added. “We are committed to the continuous search for new and innovative technologies that provide solutions to transportation needs while reducing health and climate impacts.”
A team from Amtrak and Siemens Mobility developed this series of locomotives for heavier and longer trains that travel thousands of miles in a single trip, crossing the United States from Seattle to Miami, from Los Angeles to Boston. Hull indicated that Amtrak is working with Siemens to order more of these locomotives to meet the needs of Amtrak’s network, particularly for long-distance trains.
“From the first ACS-64 in 2014 to the newest Charger locomotive, Amtrak has been at the forefront of sustainable travel for Americans. And Siemens Mobility is a proud partner in this effort. We look forward to seeing these Chargers safely transport millions of Americans across the country, whether they’re looking for new adventures or economic opportunities,” said Michael Cahill, president of rolling stock, Siemens Mobility North America.

These locomotives are Buy America compliant and will be built at Siemens Mobility’s rail assembly center in Sacramento, California. The solar-powered facility, with two megawatts of solar power and 2,200 employees, has been in operation for 30 years. It is part of Siemens Mobility’s larger US manufacturing network with eight plants, more than 4,000 employees and 2,000 US suppliers. Siemens Mobility has a robust U.S. supply chain to support locomotive production, including Cummins, which manufactures the Tier 4-compliant diesel engines in Seymour, Indiana.
Amtrak is financing the new locomotives and additional multi-year maintenance with approximately $850 million, which was secured when the order was placed in 2019. The new locomotives will primarily replace Amtrak’s P40 and P42 locomotives, some of which have more than 25 years of experience on some sponsored by government routes, but primarily on the long-haul portion of Amtrak’s national network.
“These new locomotives are another step forward in advancing safe, clean, reliable and efficient passenger services across the country,” said Federal Railway Administrator Amit Bose. “With President Biden’s bipartisan infrastructure bill, we are able to invest even more in upgrading the rail infrastructure that will transform the lives of Americans.”

Apparently what they’ve always wanted to do is travel by train from New York to New Orleans. Or travel longer distances by train – distances that are usually flown for convenience. Old, young, male, female, it doesn’t matter. All of them have long harbored a desire to take the slow road, but have never put it into practice.
I write about alcohol. Every July there is a liquor fair in New Orleans. I had traveled every year, always by plane. Last summer I got bored of the routine and vowed to break it. I checked the Amtrak website and found that there is a line called the Crescent that runs along the Eastern Corridor all the way to Washington, DC. followed and then meandered south toward New Orleans. It took 30 hours.
I had a day off. Only O.K. remained. the plan with my companion. “Oh My God!” She said. “I’ve always wanted to do this!” (Or words to that effect.)

Despite our shared excitement, part of me wondered if the trip was a good idea. Amtrak is in the news regularly and not in a good way. A derailment here, a delay there. Penn Station’s “Summer of Hell” was a tabloid. Had I set up a fantasy (beautiful scenery, air brakes, cocktails in the dining car) that had no connection to reality (aging cars, tourists, boredom)?
I admit I’m a romantic. I also admit to being a cynic. It means I’m suspicious of my romantic tendencies. All my life I have sentimentalized train travel. But even after three decades of Amtrak travel, I still found it a lot of fun and decided my romance wasn’t just self-delusion.
I had only previously undertaken a journey of the length I now contemplated. Soon after I graduated college, I rode the California Zephyr from Chicago to San Francisco and back through Montana and the Dakotas on the Empire Builder. I was 23 years old at the time and I slept sitting up. This time it wouldn’t be enough. I was older and needed comfort. A private room lived up to my train travel dreams, but I’ve always found this luxury prohibitively expensive. So I was happy to find a price of $280 one way. The price included a “roomette”, the smallest private compartment offered. (I booked well in advance. By the time I left, that number had more than doubled.)
We arrived at Penn Station with an hour to spare. There were no obvious signs of hell, except that we were put on the Silver Meteor bound for Miami. The Crescent normally runs all the way from New York to NOLA, but the construction of Penn Station prevented it from going further north than D.C.

A porter led us to our car. We entered and were immediately ushered into narrow corridors reminiscent of old movies.
The room was just as small as advertised – 1.90 x 1.80 meters – but well organized, like one of those all-in-one handhelds advertised on evening television. In one corner there was a place to hang my bag of clothes. Opposite was a toilet; Above it is a sink that can be retracted into the wall. There were towels and soap on the sink and a paper cup dispenser. A cavity in the wall, high enough to be overlooked, swallowed the luggage. Between the two opposite, fairly spacious seats was an extendable table with a checkerboard on it. Switches above each seat controlled three lights: ceiling, wall and reading light.
Everything was fine for me. Regardless of my height (1.80 m), I have always felt most comfortable in comfortable rooms. One bedroom apartments relax me; McMansions make me nervous.
On leaving the station it turned out that not only did we have one long window, but we also had a second upper window slightly hidden by the top bunk. The room was bathed in light.
