The Health Information Technology program consists of general education courses, predetermined HIT courses, and assigned clinical experiences. Specific locations depend on the type of course.

Required general education courses can be taken on the Belleville, Sam Wolf Granite City, or Red Bud campuses or online.
Clinical studies are conducted in hospitals/clinical facilities throughout the district and St. Lodewijk. Students may be required to travel outside of the university district for clinical experience courses. Background checks and drug testing may be required prior to clinical experience. Specific clinical placement cannot be guaranteed.
HIT courses are offered online only. Students are responsible for their own transportation and attendance at any of the classes and clinics assigned by the program.
Southwestern Illinois College’s accreditor of health information technology is the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Health Information Management Education (CAHIIM). College accreditation for the associate degree in health information technology has been reaffirmed through 2021.

Upon successful completion of the HIT curriculum, graduates receive an Associate of Applied Science degree in Health Information Technology and are eligible to take the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) Registered Health Information Technology exam. The program prepares you to take the AHIMA accreditation exam. You will also become an expert in RHIA skills that are quickly in demand. The demand for care services is expected to increase as the population ages.”
