Given the notorious traffic conditions on I-5 — not to mention the hassle and high cost of parking your car in airport parking lots during your trip — chances are you’ll quickly throw out that idea.

But let’s say a ride-sharing service can take you to your neighborhood Starbucks and drop you off at or near LAX for about $50, maybe less. And you will travel by driving a Tesla.

Such an example fits perfectly with the business strategy of Tesloop, a 2-year-old Culver City-based startup that transports passengers to and from the Los Angeles, Orange County and Palm Springs areas. Last month, the company added San Diego to its SoCal chain.

“San Diego is a huge market for people traveling between LA and San Diego,” said Tesloop CEO and Co-Founder Rahul Sonad. “We think it’s about 48,000 people a day, in each direction.

“If you look at the current transportation options, driving yourself is a challenge. It’s stop-and-go, it takes a long time, it’s tiring … So we think San Diego is a really great market — the right distance. Where you can travel more efficiently with an electric car.

All the cars in the company’s fleet are all-electric Teslas — hence the name Tesloop — but Elon Musk’s signature brand has no connection to the startup.

“I think they had some discussion, but they decided it wasn’t a violation,” Tsunade said. “We’re actually in a different business category than they are. We’re in transportation; they make cars… We told them early on that if they had a problem we’d change our name and they didn’t ask us to do that.

Tesloop bills itself as the future of mass transit, similar to an airline or train system, but on a smaller and more customer-friendly scale, serving routes up to 250 miles that Tesla could predictably cover on a full charge.

The company also emphasizes its green credentials, pointing out that traveling in all-electric vehicles does not emit greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

Riders go to the company’s website and, like booking a flight, browse Tesloop’s departure times and estimated arrival times for the routes it serves.

Tesloop operates four to six times a day between the greater Los Angeles and San Diego areas and six times a day between Los Angeles and Palm Springs.

Teslaloop’s fleet consists of one Tesla Model S that seats three passengers (not counting the driver, whom the company calls the “pilot”) and seven Tesla Model X-series vehicles that seat up to four passengers.

Prices typically range from $39 to $79 per foot. If a passenger rides in the Model X’s third row, the cost can increase by $29. To avoid empty seats, a $29 fare is available the day before travel or on the day of travel.

If you prefer to travel privately, you can reserve an entire car for as little as $116.

Tesloop’s car is approaching Mission Bay. The ride-sharing service offers trips between cities such as San Diego, Los Angeles, Orange County and Palm Springs. The service uses Teslas with amenities such as WiFi, chargers, snacks and drinks.

Customers have access to free Wi-Fi modems, USB ports for electronic devices, smartphone charging cables, headphones and neck pillows. Complimentary drinks like coconut water and healthy snacks are also provided.

“Our goal is that you don’t wait more than five minutes, but there’s this thing called traffic in Southern California that sometimes gets in the way,” Sonade said, “We don’t want anyone to wait more than 20 minutes, and if you’re , so you’re waiting 20 minutes at Starbucks or in the lobby of a nice hotel, it’s not that bad… We try to make all our pick-up locations fun.

Tesloop does not offer door-to-door pickup and says its drivers will not wait more than 10 minutes for late passengers.

The drive from a Tesloop pickup location in downtown San Diego to downtown Los Angeles takes about two and a half hours. You can also go between places in greater San Diego and Orange County, but not directly from San Diego to Palm Springs.

Tesloop is working to obtain the necessary permits to pick up and drop off customers at each airport in its service area. Some of its cars make it to LAX, and Sonnad hopes to have all of Tesloop’s cars up and running within the next month.

Once a trip is booked, riders will receive several messages from the concierge via text message or mobile phone, updating them on pick-up times and notifying them of their estimated time of arrival.

Through a smartphone in the vehicle, the doorman talks to the passengers at Tesloop headquarters and is ready to meet any needs of the passengers during the journey. Passengers can request a bathroom at any time.

Sonade said Tesloop employs about 60 people, including 40 drivers and 10 people who work shifts at the company’s headquarters.

A large part of the company’s business model is based not only on the efficient use of vehicles, but also on frequent use.

Tesla offers its cars an eight-year unlimited mileage engine warranty, and Teslaloop strives to get the most out of each of its vehicles.

The oldest car in Tesloop’s fleet covers 300,000 miles without significant maintenance costs. “We had to buy a battery and get an alignment, and that was apart from the tires,” Sonade said.

Additionally, because the car is electric, Tasloop doesn’t pay for gas. And because Tesla offers customers unlimited top-ups for free, Teslaloop’s fees for charging its fleet are essentially zero.

“Let’s say you book three seats for $50,” Sonade said. “That’s $150 each trip. That’s $600 a day. That’s $17,000 a month. That’s more than anyone in the world makes with a car today. And it costs $3,000 a month to rent a car. So (you spend ) $17,000 per month and you get free fuel.

With autonomous — essentially driverless — vehicles hitting roads and highways in the coming years, Tesloop officials expect to also sell the driver’s seat to potential passengers, further boosting revenue.

“The price base of these cars is unprecedented,” Sonade said during a brief stop in Mission Bay earlier this week. He pointed to a car parked nearby. “This car is cheaper to run per mile than a Toyota Corolla.”

What if only one person is booked? Sonnad said Tesloop will not cancel a trip once a person has confirmed a seat. “We risk underbooking,” Sonnad said.

Tesloop officials say the company has not yet turned a profit, but expects to in about a year.

While Tesloop describes itself as a ride-sharing company, Sonnad doesn’t see outfits like Uber and Lyft as direct competitors because those companies focus on shorter trips.

San Diego Pledged To Shift Away From Cars. So Why Is It Still Widening Roads?

“Below 50 miles, we don’t think we have any significant advantages,” Sonade said. But covering long distances suits the Tesloop model. “We’re competing with trains and planes and buses and long-haul flights.”

The concept of Tessloop came not from Sonnad, but from his son Haydn. After getting his driver’s license, the then 16-year-old wanted to lease a Tesla and thought a good way to pay the monthly bills would be to transport people from the Los Angeles area to Las Vegas.

He was too young to have the insurance needed for a grinding service, but his tech entrepreneur father approved the idea and organized a team of startups that launched the company in 2015.

Tesloop has cut its LA-to-Las Vegas route because it found it less than cost-effective due to cheap flights between the two cities and the 270-mile distance to charge the car.

Train Routes Serving California

Sonade said the company hopes to expand service to Santa Barbara and is looking to bring Tesloop to South Florida and Texas in the long term.

While Tesla’s Nasdaq value has soared past $380 per share, the company has had its share of skeptics.

“Tesla supporters are like members of a religious cult,” former GM vice chairman Bob Lutz said last year, noting that Tesla vehicles make up a small percentage of the total auto market.

Earlier this month, the CEO of Russian oil giant Rosneft called manufacturers like Tesla overvalued and overvalued.

Transportation In Los Angeles

But Sonnad is not discouraged, as he is convinced that the entire transportation sector will be turned upside down in a few years.

“In the next 10 years, everything will change here,” Sonnad said. “Every car, every road, every gas station, every energy center.”
