“The Studies Leadership Challenge Experience was developed to bring a fun, entertaining and leadership experience full of knowledge and sustainable results to colleges,” said Tony D’Angelo, founder and producer of Collegiate Empowerment. “By combining the five practices outlined in Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner’s Student Leadership Challenge with a collegial approach to empowerment, we can meet students where they are and engage them in meaningful conversation that illuminates their best leadership experiences as well as insight into the larger questions about who they are and what their effects are.”

The Student Leadership Challenge Experience approach has four phases: inform, connect, inspire, and apply. Each step builds on the last and takes participants deeper into the five practices of exemplary leadership to see how these practices are reflected in students’ daily lives. It creates a shared language of leadership for student clubs and organizations, colleges and student groups so that young leaders can talk about leadership issues and lead their organizations, groups and teams in a way that promotes collaboration and sustainability throughout the school year.

Two schools successfully completed The Student Leadership Challenge Experience with Collegiate Empowerment: Lycoming College in Williamsport, PA and Arizona State University. The program is currently being expanded and in 2015 it will be used by 25 universities.

“The Leadership Challenge Experience has been proven to inspire our students to rise to the occasion and take the initiative to make a difference,” said Lawrence Mannolini III, director of student programs and leadership development at Lycoming College. “We feel that the content of this program is an invaluable resource for the goals our students achieve after their college experience. It is a program that we believe in and that students relate to.”

Overcoming complex challenges can be difficult. There will be times when you feel like the only option is to give up. Doubts, stress and obstacles can come in strong waves. The challenges, especially as a leader, are a road with many steep mountains.

But if you want to be the successful leader—the one you were created to be—it requires seeing challenges as opportunities. Because the best leaders know that challenges are opportunities wrapped in ugly wrapping paper.

If you want to take this idea even further, don’t approach challenges as something you have to face, or even something you have to deal with, but something you choose to solve.

Aligning The 14 Elements Of Process Safety Management

In LearnLoft’s research, we’ve found that leaders face a number of common challenges regardless of industry. Although they are usually described differently with different symptoms and players, the roots of the problems remain the same. Middle and senior management face these eight challenges fairly evenly.

This challenge is number one because inspiration is the key difference between managers and leaders. Leaders use authority and titles to demand behavior, while leaders inspire action.

Another challenge facing leaders today is redefining their culture amid remote and hybrid work. Redefining and maintaining an elite culture is difficult but ultimately achievable.

The challenge of constantly striving to meet the needs and expectations of each team member is extremely complex. If that wasn’t enough, the number of direct reports managers are now responsible for has grown by an average of 25% or more. This means that it is difficult to devote enough time to more people.

The challenge of opening people’s hearts and minds to different ways of thinking and behaving than they were used to before is difficult because we are wired to resist change. However, every industry is in a state of change, so change is needed to stay ahead of or beat the competition.

Whitney Johnson, author of Smart Growth, highlighted developing people as a significant leadership challenge. He told me, “People want to grow. They want more because the Great Divorce is a really big effort. Leaders have the humility to grow themselves so they can grow their people.” There is nothing easy about coaching and creating new opportunities for people’s development. If this is difficult for you, check out the upcoming Coaching for Excellence workshop.

The challenge of recruiting talented people is evergreen. However, there isn’t a manager I’ve coached or coached in the last 12 months who isn’t more interested in recruitment than before. Labor shortages hit almost all industries.

The challenge for any leader is to bring people together to achieve more than they can alone. By definition, a team is a group of people who come together to achieve a common goal. While this may sound simple, it’s all different, especially when it comes to remote work and mental health crises.

Improving day-to-day performance is a significant opportunity for any manager. Monte Peterson, an expert on principles and implementation at the CDA Group, said it well: “As much as people talk about implementation and say it’s the reason their organization’s plan for the next year will fail, it just goes to show that a lot of people don’t really understand.”

The biggest challenge for managers today is to avoid burnout for themselves and their teams. The C-Suite demands enormous pressure to improve results faster. While speed is essential, it also creates burnout.
