Colleges Based On Sat Scores – After some digging, I don’t think the official SAT-ACT Correspondence Table accurately reflects the admissions decisions made by the top 100 schools. I’ve had this feeling for a while now – for example, I’d look at UPenn’s class profile and see that the 25th percentile of admitted students is 1470 on the SAT, but 34 on the ACT. table constantly when recommending one test to another at the beginning of the SAT/ACT test preparation process for my students.
So I looked at the 25th/75th of accepted students at a top 40 school nationwide. percentile data and found that the official SAT/ACT Correspondence Table suggested an increase in ACT scores between 22 and 36. The difference was especially noticeable between 27 and 33. in a range where ACT scores were increased by an average of 37 SAT points.

I just want to emphasize that this is my best estimate based on my data. A few notes:
Act/sat Scores Still Matter In College Admissions
If you are interested in specific schools, you should just look at that school’s data (not my chart).
If you are skeptical, you should check some information yourself. Here are some of the schools I looked at: Purdue, Case Western, USC, Baylor, Duke, Penn State, Auburn.
I didn’t have as much data for scores below 30, although the trend was very clear in that range as well: 21 of the 23 data points contained ACT scores that were higher than would be expected from the official table. ACT Score Scholarships and SAT Score Scholarships This post focuses on scholarships offered by colleges and universities themselves. Why? Many private scholarships, while lucrative, involve full applications similar to college admissions, including letters of recommendation and essays. Many other smaller scholarships are based on essays, personal circumstances, or even your parent’s employer. While we won’t discourage you from applying for them, this post will focus on scholarships that any student can automatically earn from universities based solely on their test scores and GPA or class rank. We highlight some of the most sought-after universities and top choices, but this is not an exhaustive list. We’ll also show you how to look up this information for each college you’re interested in. Automatic National Merit Scholarships Before we get into the list of scholarships, let’s highlight another source of funding that is primarily based on test scores: National Merit. As mentioned in previous posts, the National Merit Competition recognizes the top PSAT (Practice SAT) scores in each state. While there is a $2,500 scholarship you can earn through the competition itself, you can also receive large scholarships from colleges by listing them as your first choice through National Merit. Depending on the school, you can get anything from a small stipend to a full trip. In general, public universities are more likely to give more money to public merit, although there are exceptions. For example, you can get a full travel scholarship to the University of Idaho and the University of Oklahoma. At Loyola University Chicago, a private college, you can receive $2,000 for being a National Merit Finalist by listing Loyola as a First Choice School with the National Merit Corporation. Automatic Scholarships Based on SAT/ACT Scores We now highlight colleges that award automatic scholarships based on SAT/ACT scores and qualifications such as GPA or class rank. You do not need to submit any additional application details for these scholarships, but in some cases you must apply by a certain deadline to secure a scholarship. Be sure to check out each college’s website we link to for complete information. Automatic scholarships based on SAT/ACT scores were more popular, but as many colleges became test optional, some schools switched to automatic scholarships based on GPA. However, some offer automatic scholarships based on test scores. Here are the schools we cover in detail: Florida A&M Florida Gulf Coast University Texas Tech University of Mississippi University of Missouri University of Tennessee Utah State University Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University FAMU offers a Distinguished Scholars program that covers expenses. tuition for both in-state and out-of-state students with a new SAT score of at least 1400 (math score of at least 700) or ACT score of 32 (math score of at least 32) and a FAMU recalculated GPA of at least 4.0. If you don’t meet the distinction scholarship threshold, you can still win a George W. Gore Assistant Scholarship or a Presidential Special Scholarship. Award amount depends on your GPA and test scores: Scholarship Minimum Score SAT or ACT Minimum Math Score FAMU GPA George W. Gore SAT: 1330 ACT: 29 SAT: 640 ACT: 29 3.75 Presidential Special Scholarship SAT: 1267 SAT: 600 ACT: 27 3.5 More information about scholarships can be found on the FAMU Admissions website. Florida Gulf Coast University FGCU has scholarships based on GPA and SAT/ACT scores. You will be automatically considered for these scholarships if you apply by November 1st – no separate scholarship application required! Scholarship residency requirement Minimum SAT or ACT score Minimum GPA amount per year President’s Gold Florida Resident Award SAT: 1320 ACT: 28 3.9 $5000 President’s Silver Resident Florida SAT: 1220 ACT: 25 3.5 Florida Scholarship $3000 and Green Scholarship. : 1320 ACT: 28 3.9 $15,000 Blue and Green Principals Award Non-Resident SAT: 1220 ACT: 25 3.5 $10,000 Although applicants who apply by November 1st are automatically considered for these scholarships, you also have the option of retesting for merit consideration if you take the SAT/ACT before March. Texas Tech University These Presidential Scholarships are automatic and guaranteed if you apply by the December 1 priority application deadline and are accepted to Texas Tech by June 1. Texas Tech scholarships are determined in part by your class rank, with more weight given to SAT/ACT scores. As your SAT score increases, the required class rank decreases—students with an SAT score of 1200+ or an ACT score of 25+ can receive a scholarship in the top 30% of their class, and students with an SAT score of 1400+ or a 31+ ACT score. at least 40% are entitled to receive a scholarship. Note that a small increase in your ACT or SAT score can increase your scholarship by $1,000 or more per year. Read more about scholarships on TUT’s website. University of Mississippi At the University of Mississippi, you can earn an Academic Merit Scholarship based on your GPA and SAT/ACT score. Their admissions website states that “Incoming freshmen, minimum 3.0 GPA in high school. A minimum of 23 ACTs for MS residents (1050 SAT or 1130 SAT-R) or 25 ACTs for non-residents (1130 SAT or 1200 SAT-R) will be considered for the Academic Merit Scholarship. You will automatically be considered once accepted to the University of Mississippi. University of Missouri The University of Missouri has a handful of automatic scholarships based on class rank and SAT/ACT scores. There are scholarships for both in-state and out-of-state students.
