CommunityHealth (CH) is the largest free clinic in the United States, providing a wide range of primary and specialty care, as well as educational and social services. Their mission is to provide high-quality care for outpatients, a positive learning experience for students, and a teaching experience for residents and attending physicians. CH was established in 1993 to address the West Towns health care underservation at 2611 W. Chicago Ave.
Last year, students were involved in CH’s successful implementation of a new electronic medical records system and transition to a continuum of care model, including taking on responsibility for reviewing patient laboratories. Volunteers have successfully increased physician recruitment and reduced patient wait times.
This year, the CH team hopes to increase student proficiency and EMR attendance, further increase physician recruitment, and establish a simplified method of using the system to further reduce patient wait times. In addition, all new board members set personal goals in their board area, such as fundraising or education. Volunteering at CH is a fantastic hands-on learning experience, offering a diverse patient population (Spanish/Polish speakers are strongly encouraged!) and rewarding interactions with faculty and staff.

In the 1970s, the south and southeast of Chicago were hit by a severe recession, and more than 43,000 residents of the area found themselves out of work and in need of social, financial and medical support. Recognizing the dire needs of the affected communities, Claretian Missionaries brought together community residents and other stakeholders to create a healthcare network that provides quality healthcare services to residents of the region. In 1977, CFHC (then known as Claretian Medical Center) opened its South Chicago Clinic at 91st Street and Commercial Avenue. She provided care to 400 community residents that year.
Our healthcare network currently includes locations in South Chicago, Pullman, East Side, Roseland, and Chicago Longne. Today, CFHC provides accessible, affordable and high-quality health care to more than 30,000 underserved, uninsured and underinsured patients throughout Chicago.
