For students at Concordia University in St. Paul, that’s a reality — part of a new, accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) program launched this summer. 21 students started their inaugural class this summer and 10 more this fall, including Samuel Masters.
“I think our society needs care now more than ever,” Masters said. “So far I can only say I wish I had done it sooner.”
“It’s important for me to really understand the material and download it,” said the master. “I learn very quickly. It’s very fast.”
University administrators hope the new program will address the national and local nursing shortage, which is expected to grow by 2030.

“There is a need for nurses here in the Twin Cities,” said Kendra Soule, Concordia’s nursing department chair.
The program starts three times a year and there is currently no waiting list. Students must have 60 credits to enroll, and they must be self-starters, Vassell says.
“It’s 16 months, so it’s tough,” she said. “So the student has to be ready to go. We’re there to encourage and motivate them and help support them along the way, but over 16 months they put in over 700 clinical hours and prepare them to be ready.”
The plan is welcome news for Concordia University’s clinical partners, such as Crescent Cove, a child care organization in Brooklyn. The association provides respite and end-of-life care for families of children experiencing life-limiting medical conditions, all free of charge.

“We’re trying to increase our staff; we were trying to increase staff before the coronavirus,” said Kathryn Kuehne, director of nursing and operations. “Some of [our] nurses had to stay home with their children, so they reduced their working hours, but we didn’t lose any staff.”

Kuehne believes an accelerated program offered by Concordia can attract students for whom nursing is truly a career.
“Covid has really put our profession in front of people who have worked on the phone who would never have thought to work,” Kuehne said. “They’ve seen it the hardest, so if they’re drawn to nursing even under the conditions they’ve seen, I think we’re attracting some great, strong candidates to our profession, and I’m very grateful to them.” Concordia College has revamped its accelerated nursing program, where students will receive a BSN degree (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) within 12 months. The new curriculum will start in January 2023 with 16 students.

“We started the pandemic with a nursing shortage, and COVID has made it worse,” said Rebecca Amundsen, executive director of Concordia’s graduate and continuing education program. “Concordia is pleased to rebuild the workforce and provide the support our nation’s nurses need. .”
The revamped program condensed and accelerated the curriculum by moving to a block class format. The new program is a full semester longer than the previous 18-month program, and the college has worked hard to maintain Concordia’s high-quality educational standards, said Dr. Steve Stapleton, department chair and professor of nursing.
“The 12-month curriculum design integrates nursing knowledge, skills and clinical experience in a short period of time with little gap between experiences,” Stapleton said. “It allows students to grasp the material more effectively.”
Admission to the accelerated 12-month program is open to college graduates with an advanced degree from an accredited institution who have completed a bachelor’s degree or prerequisite courses without nursing training. At the time of registration, all clinical placements are included and scheduled for students.

“One of the things that makes Concordia unique is that through our strong partnerships, we place our students in a variety of settings, including hospitals, nursing homes and clinics,” Amundsen said. “This experience is invaluable.”
Upon successful completion of the program, students are eligible to take the Nurse Candidate Licensure Examination (NCLEX) to become an RN (Registered Nurse). Historically, 97% of Concordia nursing graduates pass the NCLEX-RN on their first attempt. They also meet the eligibility requirements for Minnesota Public Health Nursing registration. Concordia University-St. Paul (Minn.) will host the accelerated program in Portland. But for those in the traditional campus-based program, it’s a different story.

According to a Concordia University spokesperson, current and prospective students in Concordia University’s accelerated degree program in nursing will complete their studies in Portland.

The agreement results in a seamless transfer of credit for all students enrolled in nursing in the “accelerated degree in nursing [accelerated degree in nursing] pathways and a simple transition for incoming students,” Concordia University-St. Paul said in a press release.
