Sat Sri Akal Welcome to another flight report! This report describes a trip I took with eight other people to a conference near San Francisco.
Background: We were traveling in a large group, so we had no say in the booking process, but we were happy when the travel time came in the email. We were all scheduled to fly ELM-DTW-SFO Thursday night from Delta and return east Saturday night on the SFO-DTW-ELM radial flight Sunday night. Both SFO flights were operated by Delta Air Lines domestic 767-300s, and the passengers were very comfortable.
The story (short version): However, the first flight of the day was delayed by two hours, so I missed the last DTW-SFO flight of the night. Somehow all 9 of us were able to rebook on another flight, 5 from Binghamton (BGM) via DTW and the other 4 (including me) from Syracuse (SYR) via JFK. However, en route to Syracuse, the flight to JFK was canceled due to weather around New York City. Delta rebooked all four of us on the first flight the next morning, which meant we missed most of our travel meetings. We considered canceling the tickets, but at least convinced the group to go to the airport and speak directly to the agency.

We arrived at the Delta check-in counter in Syracuse around 5:10pm and contacted an agent a few minutes later. The agent immediately told me that there were three seats available on the 6pm flight to Atlanta. After quickly figuring out who would be the odd one out if there weren’t any passengers waiting on MD-88 to Atlanta, I headed to security as boarding began. Fortunately, the security checkpoint in Syracuse wasn’t too busy around 5:30pm and everyone got through quickly. After a tense few minutes near the gate where everyone was waiting to be assigned a seat (the check-in officer was unable to assign a seat even though it was confirmed), everyone boarded the MD-88. rode into the field. I was also assigned my favorite seat on Delta MD-88, seat 33A. 33A is a window seat directly behind the rear exit door with no seat forward.
See from 33A. An American A319 is about to depart for CLT and a CRJ-700 is arriving from ORD.
The flight to Atlanta went without incident. It was my first time commuting to Atlanta, and I was amazed at how far south it is compared to upstate New York. That day I had a 45 minute flight to Detroit and then a 5 hour flight to San Francisco. But it was a 2 hour 20 minute flight to Atlanta and a 5 hour 15 minute flight to San Francisco. This extra 90 minutes of flight time was very noticeable for some reason.
We arrived in Atlanta at 8:10pm, just after sunset. But it gave the clouds a nice glow as we approached Atlanta.

Reach Concourse B from Gate B16. Our flight to San Francisco was scheduled to depart from the A24. This meant I had a slightly longer walk through the tunnel to A. Our flight to San Francisco will be westbound, which is somewhat unusual in the US. Radie – As it turns out, it will depart before 10pm ET and arrive shortly after 3am ET (actually eastbound radii, from 10pm PT to 3:00am PT). Take advantage of a good night’s sleep after your flight.
After dinner at one of the many eateries at the Atlanta airport, we all sat down by the gate. Then I realized why the Syracuse agents were so confident that we would all board the ATL-SFO flight that night. An overhead screen in the gate area displayed a list of flight upgrades, including the number of seats available in each cabin. Tonight’s flight had over 120 empty seats, and the load factor was only 50%. This was a huge improvement for me, especially since earlier in the day I had to sit in the middle seat on a 6 hour packed flight from JFK to SFO.
Boarding started on time and completed quickly. The front seats in the economy section were almost full, and the middle seats were mostly empty. I took a seat in the 37th row and was happy to see that the other 5 seats in that row were empty. At the far end of the room, between the last two sets of doors, there were only seven people in a row of nine.
I was immediately struck by how nice the cabin was. The seats were fairly new and there was a very good IFE system. The mood lighting was pleasant and not intrusive (as an aside, I have yet to see a photo on the internet that accurately captures the color blue. Below is one of the closest that I’ve noticed, it was actually very comfortable, especially at night) and all the seats had pillows and blankets. The added Live TV IFE feature was especially helpful on this flight.
