A small group trip is not a large group trip, it is scaled back. It is modeled after independent travel but has the advantage of having a group leader who takes care of travel, accommodation and tickets and language. It’s easy to tag the big attractions on your own, but finding those one-off experiences, local festivals, traveling markets and secret viewpoints is nearly impossible for someone without years of experience in the field. People with a two-week vacation can save valuable time by planning a small group tour.

As pioneers in responsible tourism, we’ve reviewed this (and every) holiday, so you can travel knowing you’re helping to support the places and people you visit, and the planet. Read how below.

From Mexico City To Cancun ( 11 Days ) By Europamundo With 2 Tour Reviews (code: 19100)

We use a wide range of accommodation, including some characterful colonial properties as well as more modern hotels, all with en-suite facilities. Some of the properties include a restored 16th-century monastery in downtown Oaxaca and a Spanish colonial residence in the heart of San Cristóbal de las Casas. Accommodation is mainly locally owned and operated, which contributes to the local economy. Local labor is employed and locally produced or sourced goods are used. The group’s relatively small size allows it to use even smaller properties, including the Hunik family of La Aldea del Halach near Palenque.

Mexico is famous for its cuisine and there are plenty of opportunities to discover famous dishes and more local dishes. In Oaxaca, we visit a local food market to learn about commonly used ingredients before joining a cooking class and learning how to prepare different dishes. In nearby Teotitlán del Valle, we visit a mezcal distillery and try this Mexican drink.

Near Uxmal, we dine at a Mayan family restaurant where we taste typical Yucatan dishes such as slow-cooked pork and slow-cooked chicken called pollo pibil and conchita pibil. Elsewhere, there is an opportunity to dine in local restaurants and try regional delicacies.

This tour has a strong focus on exploring the rich scope of Mexican culture throughout the ages. We will visit many pre-Columbian sites including Aztec, Mayan and Zapotec sites such as Teotihuacan, Monte Alban, Palenque, Uxmal and Chichen Itza. We explore the country’s colonial past by visiting old Spanish-Mexico cities such as Oaxaca, Puebla, Merida and San Cristóbal, and experience 20th century and contemporary culture in Mexico by visiting the Frida Kahlo Museum. All these visits contribute to the preservation of the country’s rich and diverse cultural heritage.

Mistakes People Make When Visiting Cancun

We have many opportunities to interact with local people, learn about their heritage and contribute directly to their livelihood.

We visit a Zapotec community that makes traditional weaves in countless colors. The textiles and ceramics of the Zapotec people follow ancient traditions and remain relatively unchanged after hundreds of years. On the Yucatan Peninsula, we will visit the village of Tixcocob, famous for traditional hammock making, where we will learn the ancient technique from a local family. Everywhere there are various opportunities to buy locally produced handicrafts directly from markets, shops and artisans.

Water is a very important factor in our travels, and while we need to stay hydrated, it is also important to have a system to get clean water without wasting too many plastic bottles. Whenever possible, we provide alternative water sources for the purchase of single-use plastic bottles. This could be through large water tanks or by encouraging our passengers to filter, sterilize or purify their water. We encourage all our passengers to come prepared with a reusable water bottle.

We encourage leaving footprints and recycling on this tour and also encourage picking up existing litter. However, this tour encourages guests to actively talk to local people, visit local cafes and restaurants, use the markets to buy traditional gifts and crafts, and get a real feel for Mexico. We interact with locals and traditions during included activities (cooking class, weaving demonstrations, lunch with a local family, hammock-making demonstration) and during free time, when a local guide can direct travelers to various markets, cafes and other local establishments. Buying local food, drinks and souvenirs is encouraged as it encourages interaction with Mexicans throughout the tour and at the same time supports their local products.

It’s a small group tour, which means we have a minimal impact on the environment and communities we visit, and we can ensure we don’t disrupt or displace local people. Being small in number allows us to stay in unique family-run hotels that do not benefit from bus tours and other mass tourism due to their limited size.

It starts at home, where we work to reduce our carbon footprint in our offices through energy-saving measures, recycling policies and encouraging cycling and walking. Our head office has become a plastic free zone as the use of plastic bottles has been banned in the head office and we have distributed reusable water bottles and carrier bags to every employee. We also support a large number of community and environmental projects in different parts of the world and try to give something back to the places we visit.

People Our local tour operators are non-profit organizations that work directly with communities and individuals in Mexico – sometimes on the recommendation of the Department of Culture and Social Services. This means that each trip includes ongoing activities to improve the lives of local communities, such as building or renovating schools, setting up first aid clinics, collecting and donating clothing, dental supplies for students and school supplies. In addition, we are committed to employing local guides and using local services where possible to support the local economy.

While visiting some remote or rural villages, we encouraged local women to make handicrafts that could be sold to consumers or kept for personal use. We distribute supplies such as sewing materials and decorative items so that these women have an opportunity to earn an income by selling clothes, accessories and jewelry, which would otherwise be difficult to make ends meet. Our ship also has a gift shop with handmade Mexican gifts from local families. Not only is it economically beneficial to the region, but it also celebrates traditional Mexican production methods. In particular, your guide will advise you what not to buy: stuffed puffer fish, bone carvings, snakeskin accessories, etc. can be found in the area.

MV Adventure is a newly built 110′ aluminum hull vessel that can accommodate up to 16 passengers. Multi-level decks are perfect for wildlife viewing and accommodation is in private double cabins with upper and lower single berths. Meals are included in the price and include a variety of fresh and nutritious foods, including locally sourced fruit, vegetables, meat and fish. Meals reflect traditional Mexican cuisine, and if we stay on land as part of a tour or hotel extension, local guides will be happy to recommend authentic restaurants or markets in the area.

A maximum of 16 people can participate in this small group tour, which means we have a minimal impact on the environment and communities we visit and ensure we don’t disrupt or displace local people. This small number also allows for stays in exclusive family-run hotels that do not benefit from coach travel and other mass tourism due to limited size. #39 of 84 airlines with at least 10 seconds in the last two days
