But, of course, everything depends on the severity of the stain. “Underarm stains can take months to get rid of, but before washing a sweaty underarm shirt after one wear, you can pre-treat it to remove the stain and prevent it from building up,” says Mary. The pretreatment you use depends on the fabric. Before washing colored and white spandex underwear, treat them with a safe bleach (such as Clorox 2 for colored items) for extra cleaning power. White fabrics that are safe to bleach, such as cotton and polyester, should be washed in hot or at least warm water with a bleach disinfectant. The Clorox team recommends first applying a little dish soap to the stain, rubbing it in, waiting five minutes, and then washing it off. Once you’ve done this, you can soak the shirt in a solution of bleach and water (check the instructions on the bleach bottle for the correct ratio) for five minutes, then rinse and let it air dry.

In the past, when things like red wine or tomato sauce went bad, a little chlorine bleach could restore your top to its former glory. Unfortunately, this remedy simply does not treat underarm stains.
