Every month we hear reports that one of the most painful aspects of losing a loved one to COVID is not being able to truly say goodbye.

Sometimes the disease progresses too quickly to allow even a distant farewell. In other cases, family and friends of victims may use Facetime, Zoom or phone calls to let them know how much they are loved and missed. But it is not the same – far from it. Those who have lost someone to this pandemic, in many cases, have not had the chance to hug their parents, children, siblings or friends one last time. And the opportunity to say goodbye to him face to face.

We know that nothing can replace it. But we believe that keeping those last thoughts and feelings bottled up can be an added challenge. That’s why we offer everyone who couldn’t say goodbye in person the opportunity to share what you would say if you could be there for them.

In the U.S., COVID has claimed more than 430,000 lives — nearly 3,000 in Philadelphia alone. what would you say to them Can you tell that they made you feel important? Now appreciate the lucky jersey they wore when they saw Philly? Or that Thanksgiving just wouldn’t be the same without his autograph?

If you’ve lost someone to COVID and want to say goodbye, we’re here to help. You can record or record something yourself and send it to a video or audio file. If you’re interested in getting involved, but struggling on your own, a reporter from one of our Broke in Philly editorial partners will reach out to chat with you and let those words and thoughts flow. Or express yourself differently. Art, dance, song, everything.

We will launch a website to publish these articles starting March 10, one year after the first case of COVID in Philadelphia. From there, we will collect the farewell.
