The editor-in-chief is the director. Most editor-in-chief guides the journal and builds a strong management team. They must consider and balance the interests of many constituents, including readers, authors, staff, publishers, and editorial board members. The editor-in-chief is responsible for ensuring an effective, fair and timely review process for manuscripts submitted for publication and for establishing and maintaining high standards of technical and professional quality.
The Editor-in-Chief’s decision to accept or reject a paper for publication should be based on the importance, originality and clarity of the paper, and the relevance of the study to the journal submission. Consideration should be given without regard to the author’s race, religion, ethnic origin, sex, seniority, nationality, professional association, institutional affiliation, or political philosophy.
All original studies must be peer-reviewed before publication, taking full account of biases due to related or conflicting interests. This requires the Editor-in-Chief to ask for advice from Associate Editors or others who are experts in a specific field and submit manuscripts sent for publication to reviewers selected for their expertise and good judgment to assess the quality and reliability of manuscripts. Manuscripts may be rejected without review if deemed inappropriate for the journal.
The Editor-in-Chief must treat all submitted papers as confidential. The Editor-in-Chief and editors will not disclose any information about the manuscript under consideration to anyone other than a person seeking professional advice on the publication of the manuscript. The Editor-in-Chief or the Editor will not disclose the names of the reviewers.

The editor-in-chief should consider submitted manuscripts for publication as soon as possible. Authors should be informed periodically about the status of the review process. In cases where sufficient speed cannot be achieved due to unforeseen circumstances, it is the duty of the Editor-in-Chief to withdraw himself from the process in good time so as not to unduly influence the publication of the author’s work.
If misconduct is suspected, the Editor-in-Chief should first write to the author before contacting the head of the relevant institution.
The Editor-in-Chief must ensure that the author’s submission guidelines for the journal specify that the manuscript does not need to be submitted to another journal at the same time. The guidelines should also describe the review process, including issues of confidentiality and timing.
The editor-in-chief distributes to Human Kinetics (specifically, the journal’s managing editor) manuscripts accepted for publication approximately three months before the publication date.

The editor-in-chief must disclose any relevant conflicts of interest (his or her team, editorial board, manager, or publisher) to readers, authors, and reviewers.
