Jeep Cherokee 2002 Limited Edition

Jeep Cherokee 2002 Limited Edition – The Jeep Grand Cherokee has long served as one of the most practical sports cars on the market. Equal parts luxury and utility, the Jeep Grand Cherokee offers customers a “best of both worlds” approach to hauling kids and picking up groceries. This versatile range has propelled the Grand Cherokee to a level of popularity that few could have imagined following the introduction of the luxury wagon in 1992.

By 2002, the decade-old Grand Cherokee entered second-generation production. In this format, the Grand Cherokee had a “WJ” badge and was much larger than its first iteration. Those at the helm of Chrysler’s design team spent the early years of the new millennium fine-tuning the company’s “all-new” Grand Cherokee, and the 2002 model was no exception.

While the sport utility market has been dominated by the Ford Explorer almost since its inception, the Jeep Grand Cherokee has filled a gap that was much larger than one might imagine. At first, many thought of the Jeep as rugged in nature, more capable than luxurious. However, the Grand Cherokee is designed to meet the needs of those looking for a little something extra from their sports car.

Jeep Grand Cherokee Review & Ratings

The second-generation Grand Cherokee exemplifies this point by improving several of the line’s best features. Some of the highlights of this update include the addition of new audio equipment, interior accents and dash/cluster designs across all trim levels. Each of the Grand Cherokee’s existing two powerplants has also been revised for improved efficiency and reliability.

The 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee was offered to customers with a choice of two available powerplants. The first of these two options was the Grand Cherokee’s base engine, a 4.0-liter six. This sturdy six-cylinder was the recipient of several revisions for the 1999 model year, which included the addition of a revised manifold. All things considered, the 4.0-liter six made 195 horsepower.

Customers can also opt for a 4.7-liter V8 that produces 235 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. That engine is mated to a four-speed automatic transmission, though the 4.7-liter V8 can also be paired with a new five-speed automatic that first debuted on the 2001 Grand Cherokee’s option sheet.

The 2002 Grand Cherokee can be had in either a 2WD or 4WD configuration, regardless of engine choice. Selec-Trac and Quadra-Trac 4WD systems were also offered. The first of the two systems allowed for full-time traction, even on hard surfaces, while the second (Quadra-Trac) provided consistent traction and could deliver power anywhere on the rim as needed.

Chrysler officials also put a lot of time and effort into improving the Grand Cherokee’s ride quality and handling. To solve these problems, the WJ Grand Cherokee was equipped with a three-link rear suspension, front/rear control arms and modified springs.

In fact, little has changed about the Grand Cherokee between 2001 and 2002. However, in the last two years, optional airbags have been introduced. In addition, a special edition Overland package was also introduced. All Overland Grand Cherokees are equipped with a 265-horsepower 4.7-liter V8 option. This package also includes real wood trim and upgraded leather seats.

The 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee was as popular with consumers as any previous offering. With 224,233 units sold in the 2002 model year, Jeep’s latest sport utility vehicle has been riding a wave of success like no other. That popularity would ultimately last for decades, further cementing the Grand Cherokee’s already stellar legacy.

Jeep Grand Cherokee (WJ) is the second generation of the Jeep Grand Cherokee sport utility vehicle. Launched in Detroit, Michigan on June 16, 1998, production continued until 2004 in the US and in foreign markets until 2005. The WJ has been completely redesigned from its ZJ predecessor and is known for its off-road capabilities. Jeep (WJ) was the “most powerful SUV ever” on the market.

Unveiled at Cobo Hall in Detroit, MI on June 16, 1998, the redesigned WJ 1999 Grand Cherokee shared only 127 parts with its predecessor (mostly faster) and took 28 months to arrive in March 1996 (styling confirmed in the third quarter of 1999). The spare tire was moved from the side of the cargo box under the floor. The two heavy-duty V8s have been replaced by Chrysler’s new PowerTech. The new V8 engine produced less torque than the old tube, but was lighter, offered better fuel economy, and provided similar performance on the road (the 23-gallon fuel tank was replaced with a 20.5-gallon one). The Gine Inline 6 was also updated for MY1999. A revised intake manifold added 10 hp (7.5 kW). While other Jeeps used the Mopar 5 x 4.5 wheel bolt pattern, this was the first Jeep since Chrysler’s acquisition in 1987 to receive wider wheel bolts: – 5 x 5 – (5 x 127 mm metric) .

A notable feature of this generation was an automatic four-wheel drive option called Quadra-Drive, which used the New Vture Gear NV247 transmission. This two-speed chain transmission uses a gerotor, a clutch pack connected to a hydraulic pump, to transmit torque between the front and rear axles. The transmission has three modes, 4-All Time, Neutral and 4-Lo. 4-At all times, 100% of the torque goes to the rear axle under normal conditions. If the rear axle is spinning at a higher speed than the front axle, the hydraulic pressure in the gerotor increases, causing the clutch block to gradually transfer torque to the front axle so that both axles return to the same speed. Neutral mode is for driving. In 4-Lo, the front and rear axles are locked by reducing the gear ratio to 2.72. The NV247 transmission is mated to front and rear axles with Jeep Vari-Lok differentials. Vari-Lok differentials also use a gerotor to transfer torque between the wheels on either side of the axle. The main advantage of the Quadra-Drive was that the combination gearbox and progressive locking differential on each axle automatically controlled the traction between all four wheels. However, only the cter differential could be permanently locked, and only in 4Lo. The Quadra-Trac II system includes an NV247 transfer case with standard front and rear differentials.

The WJ featured the 45RFE and 545RFE automatic transmissions. It featured three sets of planetary gears rather than the two normally used in four-speed automatics. This gave it a theoretical six speeds, and it would have been the first six-speed transmission in volume production, but it was programmed to use only five ratios. Four mechanisms were used to raise the assembly, and a second mechanism was used to lower the assembly. Although five six-speed manual transmissions were used, Chrysler decided to call it a “4-speed automatic”. In 2001, the programming was changed to use all six ratios. Instead of having six forward gears, the transmission is programmed as a five-speed gearbox with a second alternate gear reduction. RPM at 70 miles per hour (113 km/h) in the 545RFE is 2,000 rpm, 200 rpm less than the 45RFE programming. 1999 and 2000 WJ owners can program their 45RFE transmission for additional gearing capability as both transmissions are physically identical. The 42RE 4-speed automatic remained the transmission for the Inline 6 engine. It had little changes compared to the previous model of the Grand Cherokee.

The interior has also been completely changed. The new design allowed for larger rear doors and more space for rear passengers. Controls for various items such as headlights, heated seats and rear wiper have been moved to more attractive locations. The vehicle’s electronic information center was moved from below the radio to the top of the windshield and was standard on all 2000 and up models. Limited models have dual-zone automatic climate control. CD-Changer 10 was also available with the Infinity Audio package.

A Brief History Of The Jeep Grand Cherokee

This is done to reduce NVH (noise, vibration and harshness). UniFrame is an unusual construction plan that includes all the strength and stability of the body structure within a single structure. By adding stiffness and rigidity to the structure, they strengthened the ride and strengthened the network of steel beams, rails and supports (aka “safety cages”) that surround and protect the occupants. More than 70 percent of the bottom of the hull is high-strength steel. All Jeep Grand Cherokees feature UniFrame construction.

The Grand Cherokee received a minor facelift for 2004, including round fog lights, a lower front fascia, and a new body-color dashboard design.

Export models produced at the Graz, Austria plant were badged “WG” with minor differences from the US model, including a relocated radio antenna (moved from the right front fender to integrated behind the passenger)
