The Kodak Easy Lion Z981 may be a bit of a plastic rock that produces oversaturated images, but £240 is a bargain for a 26x zoom camera. Its price is the Z981’s saving grace.
Although this 14-megapixel camera with 26x zoom may be physically more impressive than direct competitors such as the Pentax X90, Nikon Coolpix P100, Olympus SP-800UZ and Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ100 and the less qualified the better. FinePix HS10. Unfortunately for Kodak, we mean less in many ways.
Just a few months ago, Kodakwas questioning what seemed like an exorbitant £400 for a camera. This meant that it not only rivaled the 30x zoom HS10, one of the best cameras in its class, but also an entry-level digital SLR. Fortunately, the price tag has dropped to a very realistic £240 at the time of writing. So we can’t criticize it price wise.

This reduced cost also partially excuses the plastic build quality and the fact that the lens resembles a narrow and suddenly vulnerable piece of chute when extended 64mm out from the body at maximum zoom. It feels a bit soft, and moves in its own home.
The overall dimensions of the camera are a large but manageable 124 x 85 x 105 mm. If there’s one positive to take from the thicker-than-average controls and grip, it’s that the Z981 will appeal to sausage fingers.
This is a flat image, with very warm colors. It will benefit from adjusting the brightness and contrast in some editing programs (click image to enlarge).
Ease of use is one of the Z981’s biggest selling points besides the zoom. It’s part of the EasyShare family, so a “Share” button is prominently displayed to mark specific images for email or instant printing. We would have preferred a dedicated video recording button in its place – something that’s easy to mistake for a red button at first glance.

Instead, recording 720p high-definition movies starts and stops with a press of the shutter button. The built-in mono microphone is very sensitive and records feature corrections, but we like that the optical zoom remains available in movie mode, with continuous focus adjustment if you leave the camera in its default continuous auto setting.
TheZ981 feels a little light in the hand, even though the body only weighs 520g. Extra power is provided by the four handy pre-charged NiMH AA batteries that power the Z981, inserted into the base of the handle. We’re less fond of the sliding compartment door that holds them in place. It was so tight on our model that we had to open and close it.
The focal length isn’t redundant in terms of 35mm at 26-676mm, so in theory the Z981 should be as adept at shooting panoramas as it is at capturing distant subjects. We experienced a noticeable effect of camera shake — softer images — when shooting hand-held in daylight at maximum zoom.
Images are instantly uploaded and displayed via a 76mm (3in), 230,000-dot LCD screen or electronic viewfinder of similar resolution. A button on the back allows you to switch between them in an instant.

In Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority and Manual shooting modes, a toolbar of key functions appears at the bottom of the screen, including exposure and ISO settings between 64 and 1600. Other options are made by pressing the button below. A small jog dial protrudes from the top plate of the Z981. While it is thoughtful of Kodak to provide users with this shortcut, the ability to make the same selection as the control pad with the large thumb on the right side of the display would be more convenient.
The camera is slower than we would like when processing images. A maximum resolution JPEG takes 5 seconds to write to an SD or SDHC memory card.
Unusually, there’s a second shutter button at the end of the grip, so you can avoid stretching your fingers when turning the camera to shoot portrait-style. This is a feature usually only found in high-end professional dSLRs, which are even bigger than the Z981. However, you have to first flip the switch on the Z981’s top plate to activate the button, and really that’s a bit unnecessary. Very useful, and again like a dSLR, is the ability to shoot raw and JPEG files.

However, there is no dSLR-like hot shoe for attaching an external flash, as offered by the Panasonic FZ100 and Fujifilm HS10. There is only one pop-up option, which to be fair is perfect for amateur snappers.
Users can also choose between two colors. Available in “Natural” or “High Colour” for extra visual power. Since the former delivers images that other cameras produce when set to “bright”, the latter results in stunning colors that you’ll immediately want to tone down in your editing software.
Just a few weeks ago, the Kodak EasyShare Z981 seemed like an overpriced dud. But with a price drop that puts it even more with point-and-shoot compact cameras than entry-level dSLRs, the Z981 now looks like it offers exceptional value for money. It has to be said, though, that if image quality is your main concern, it’s worth spending more on one of the superzoom rivals we mentioned at the start of this review.
