And, airlines like Southwest and JetBlue launched limited but valuable holiday sales last week, reinforcing the trend.
What is happening here and why? Let’s dive right in, but you already know what this means for you: A last-minute vacation break.
Let’s take a look at some of these cheap weekend flights. For Thrifty Traveler Premium and Thrifty Traveler Premium+ members, most of this is old news. Hopefully they all got these emails and ordered before the price went up.
These low prices for trips to the Mexican coast appeared last week, a few weeks before Christmas. Going to Puerto Vallarta (PVR), Cancun (CUN) or Cabo San Lucas (SJD) for the weekend? Why not? Especially when you can fly non-stop for under $400!

If Tahiti is too far for a last minute trip, we also have options closer to home. Montreal is a beautiful city with great vacations. A little European for North America, perfect for the Christmas or New Year holiday. To make this happen, we’ve seen some amazing sales over the past few weeks.
As far as Orlando (MKO), it was one of the lowest prices before the New Year. But many cities across the US benefited from an unprecedented weekend trip to Montreal.
If you have some points and miles and want to fly on the weekend, you can this year too. Celebrating Christmas or New Years in London would be great, wouldn’t it, especially flying United Polaris Business Class!
Finally, we will be close to home on our desert vacation. Southwest has recently led the way in low domestic fares, undercutting airlines such as American, Delta and United. This means that flights to Las Vegas (LAS) have been very cheap lately, including some during the New Year.

Finally, both JetBlue and Southwest recently launched a limited-time promotion. Despite the expiration of both promotions, airlines almost never discount flights during the busy holiday season, when fliers who can’t wait to get somewhere get a discount.
However, Southwest’s holiday sale includes 25% off flights on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Day and New Year’s Day.
It’s still ongoing, but JetBlue’s promotion includes discounts on Christmas Day or New Year’s.
Weekend trips are usually less expensive, but these deals were top notch. These one-way JetBlue tickets are under $25!

The takeaway for us is clear. Those ads were a sign of a trend: After months of asking travelers to pay less, many airlines have realized they’ve gone too far, leaving empty seats for the holidays. The best way to fill it is to lower the price.
Last minute vacation flights aren’t exactly cheap, but many airlines are offering great deals on flights to some of our favorite destinations around the world.
That doesn’t mean you’ll see low prices everywhere. But it can make for an inexpensive, last-minute trip during the winter holidays, and it’s a perfect gift.

For years, waiting until the last minute to book a flight was a surefire way to pay more and more for airfare. Penalty for catching early is a test of flight prices: Prices often increase within a month of departure. That’s why we always encourage travelers to book their flights at least 30-45 days in advance, especially on major US airlines.

But like tourism, that has changed. When it comes to domestic flights, we see that US airlines do not charge surcharges until 7-8 days before departure. In some cases, you can book your ticket at a cheaper price up to three days before departure.

Pro tip: As the trip gets closer, the price of the ticket you booked may drop. So set up Google Flight Price Alerts and ask the airline to provide you with a voucher or email a credit for the price difference if the price drops.

How To Find The Best Priceline Flight Deals
The same is true for American Airlines flights from Philadelphia (PHL) to Orlando (MKO). Prices go up in the days leading up to the flight, but you can book the cheapest flight and fly within the next few days.
United Airlines offers similar services on many routes, including these tickets from San Francisco (SFO) to Las Vegas (LAS). A few months ago, United charged more than 2-3 weeks before departure.
Even Southwest offers discounts weeks in advance, such as flights from its base in Denver (DEN) to Dallas-Love Field (DAL).
These are just a few examples. You may not find cheap last minute tickets all the way. But time and time again (again) we see this pattern play out at airlines large and small across the country. This is a big change from just a few months ago when airlines charged at least a month or more.

However, the change is not universal. Do we see airplanes using their old ways? Intercontinental flights between major cities, such as United flights between Newark (EWR) and San Francisco (SFO) or Delta flights from Atlanta (ATL) to San Francisco. These Delta flights won’t be discounted until sales begin in mid-March, at least three weeks later.
Airlines have built their businesses around business travelers. Their airline network shows where businessmen and women want to go. Seat selection and flight services are theirs. Airlines also base their airfares on getting the most bang for their buck from business travelers.
It was the idea that budget travelers like you and avoid paying high prices.
