(7) Ask, and it shall be given you. – The transition is again abrupt and suggests the idea that some links are missing. The latent thread of thought would be this: “If the work of reforming others and ourselves,” men might say, “is so difficult, how dare we enter upon it?” Where will we find the courage and wisdom we need?” And the answer is: in prayer for these gifts.
Here again the words are absolute and unqualified, but clearly limited by implied terms. We are supposed (1) to ask for good gifts – for “bread” and not for “stone”, for “fish” and not for “serpent”; and (2) to pray, as Christ taught us, in his name and according to his spirit. Otherwise, we can ask and not receive, because we ask wrongly.
The three words imply different degrees of intensity. There is a “searching” in the spoken words of prayer, a “searching” in the efforts and labors that are prayers, a “knocking” at the door with urgent insistence asking for admission to our Father’s house.
The Gospel According To S. Matthew. (original 1611 Kjv)
Verses 7-11. – Ask, and it shall be given to you, etc. Comparative passage: Luke 11:9-13. Almost verbally identical, but the son’s request says “egg” and “scorpion” for “bread” and “stone”, and changes the order of the sentences. In Luke, the verses are closely related (“and I say to you”) with the parable of the friend at midnight, which immediately follows the Lord’s prayer. It seems probable that, as with the Lord’s prayer (chap. 6:9-13, note), so with these verses, the original position is given in Luke; however, as with the Lord’s Prayer, Matthew’s form of the individual sentences may be more original (cf. ver. 11, note). With the general promise contained in these verses, cf. Mark 11:24. A connection with the previous verse is likely
