Northwestern State University of Louisiana (NSU) is a public university in Natchitoches, Louisiana, with a campus in Shreveport and campuses in Leesville/Fort Polk and Alexandria. It is part of the University of Louisiana System.
John S. Kyser Hall, named for NSU’s president John S. Kyser from 1953 to 1966, houses many academic departments, including history, mathematics, and journalism.

NSU was founded in 1884 as Louisiana State College. It is the first university in Louisiana to offer undergraduate programs in nursing and business education. NSU, along with other public universities, became a university in 1970 during the administration of President Arnold R. Kilpatrick, an alumnus of Northwestern State who had serving from 1966 to 1978. Kilpatrick succeeds 12-year-old president, John S. Kyser, resident. Sent from El Paso, Illinois.
NSU is one of the first six universities to participate in NASA’s Joint Venture program. Studts worked with NASA scientists to help analyze data and conduct research on the 1996 Space Shuttle Columbia shuttle mission. NSU also hosts the Louisiana Scholars’ College, Louisiana’s leading college in the arts and sciences. Also on campus is the Louisiana School for Mathematics, Science, and the Arts, a state-supported high school for sophomores, juniors, and seniors. It was the opinion of former Representative Jimmy D. Long of Natchitoches, who attended NSU.

Northwestern State University stands on the land dedicated to education for more than 100 years. Before the American Civil War, part of the main school was owned by the Bullard family of Natchitoches. In 1856, the Bullard building was used as a religious center by the Religious Society of the Sacred Heart. The following year, a school was built on the convt, and in 1884, the city and town of Natchitoches purchased the property. Three of the four large white columns that once supported the east side of the main building still stand at the “Bell” and serve as unofficial symbols of the school.

In 1884, the Louisiana State Legislature in Act 51 established the Louisiana State Normal School for the preparation of teachers. Soon after, a new member of the Louisiana House of Representatives, Leopold Caspari of Natchitoches, offered the convt place as a school with the hope that the citizens of Natchitoches would accept it. The acceptance was accepted, and from 1885 to 1918, the school had two years of study to train teachers. Baccalaureate programs began, and the Louisiana Constitution of 1921 changed the school’s name to Louisiana State Normal College. The resources and contributions of the “regulars” were extended to meet the diverse needs of Louisiana’s growing population. In 1944, the good work of the institution in its general work was recognized by Act 326 of Congress, which changed its name to Northwestern State College of Louisiana.
Northwestern State maintained and strengthened its long tradition of leadership in public service and academic excellence and became, in 1954, the first university in in the authority of the Louisiana State Board of Education to obtain a degree. The Associate in Education degree was first awarded in 1966 and the Doctor of Philosophy in Education degree was approved in 1967. On June 18, 1970, Governor John J. McKeith signed a law that desegregated the school. old, changed his name. to Northwestern State University of Louisiana. In 1980, the old quadrangle of the school where the columns stood was placed on the National Register of Historic Places under the name “Normal Hill Historic District.”
Although a local university, Northwestern State has the opportunity to study at satellite locations, including Leesville, Shreveport, and Alexandria. In addition to research, these cters are developing studt-life programs. The School of Nursing, located in Shreveport, provides training for nurses that includes clinical courses, as well as general education. Cter institutions have gone out to offer master’s, baccalaureate, and associate programs. The campus includes academic offices, faculty and staff offices, bookstores, and offices for activities and organizations.
A. A. Fredericks was president of NSU from 1934 to 1941. Later he was a member of the Louisiana State Senate and was private secretary twice to Governor Earl Kemp Long. Fredericks received his degree from Northwestern Normal in 1912. He was commemorated in the A. A. Fredericks Auditorium on campus.

Euge P. Watson of Natchitoches, for whom the NSU library is named, was director of the library and professor of librarianship from 1940 until his death in 1964. .He founded Alpha Beta Alpha, national science library fraternity. The club held its first two years on the NSU campus in 1952.
A ctnial history of NSU (1884-1984) was published by the NSU Press in 1985 by historian Marietta LeBreton, who taught for 45 years at the school, from 1963 until her untimely death in 2009.
On November 8, 1922, by President V. L. Roy and Coach H. Lee Prather’s announcement, all sports were named Monsters. The name is determined by each student’s competition, with a grand prize of $10. A committee is selected by the president to narrow down the names submitted by the students’ body The final choice was made by student vote. The two most popular picks are the Braves and Monsters. Among other names given by students are Sharks, Daredevils, Musketeers, Pelicans, Prather’s Ground Hogs, Bloodhounds, Cyclops, and Serpts. The winners were Aile Ritter and Truett Scarborough.
On September 22, 1984, Dab received his nickname from another competition sponsored by the sports industry. The competition is suitable for teachers, staff, and students. The goal is to find a name for the Ghost. More than 300 tests were submitted to the committee. The grand prize is a week’s pay at the Louisiana State Fair Classic. Ray Carney, a student at the school, is the winner with “Vic”, which is short for “Victory”.
