In 2021, the college saw its largest BSN graduation to date, with 794 students earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing between pre- and post-licensure nursing programs.
Edson College recently began offering a BSN program again on its west campus. In 2021, the college also launched its first program at ASU Lake Havasu with the goal of helping address the nursing shortage in rural areas. The first Havasu cohort graduated this summer.
In addition to seeking opportunities to expand nursing programs, the college’s leadership has embarked on a new approach to maintaining the importance of clinical experience for nursing majors. With the introduction of the “team model”, students now spend most of their clinical time in the same healthcare organization.
Describing the benefits of the team model, Salina Bednarek, senior director of the pre-licensure nursing program and clinical assistant professor at Edson College, called it a win-win.

“The benefits of this model are that the institutions get to know them as students, the students get to know the facilities, and they can focus more on learning the concepts that we’re trying to instill in them,” he said. .
The College has successfully partnered with healthcare organizations to meet their workforce needs in cohort models, which are now reflected in the team model. The first was the establishment of the Mayo Clinic cohort in 2002, followed by the opening of a special education unit with Phoenix Children’s. However, this is the first time this model has been installed throughout the program.
Ultimately, the team model aims to create a stronger workforce and reduce some of the time it takes for new nurses to transition from student to new graduate registered nurse to their first job. So far, academic training partners like Dignity Health and Banner have embraced the innovative approach and are seeing the benefits firsthand.
“For the doctors and staff, they get to know the students a lot,” said Alexis Warren, an education specialist at St. Joseph Hospital and Medical Center. “They are very comfortable. There is a really well-established relationship. And all of this ultimately creates a better and safer environment for our patients.”

Finding partnerships and opportunities to grow the BSN program while providing the best evidence-based education is a top priority for leadership, adding to the college’s legacy of care and future discovery.
“This ranking is certainly a recognition of the hard work of our program leadership, faculty and staff, as well as the innovative strategies we have implemented to prepare the best nurses while maintaining our rigorous curriculum,” said Kathryn Kenny, associate dean on academic matters. “It’s also a reflection of our graduates who practice across the country and represent Sun Devil nurses through their high level of care.”
