You can take a bus from San Diego to LAX if you have the time and want cheap, cheap, or adventurous.
Let me be clear. Many buses are available from San Diego to LAX and from Los Angeles back to San Diego. Remember that bus routes are subject to traffic conditions.
If you have a lot of luggage or if you want to check in large luggage, it is better to avoid using the bus. But if you really need it, here’s the route:

It’s easy, convenient, you can read and work, have free Wi-Fi and avoid traffic jams. Also, if you sit on the right side, you can watch the waves while looking out at the ocean. I usually take the train from San Diego to LAX. Then when I flew to LAX, I caught the train from LAX back to San Diego.
Departs before 7am unless it’s an early morning flight. Then I rent a car one way (see #5).

Metrolink and Amtrak are not an option for early morning flights departing before 8am, so you’ll need to book a one-way rental car to get from San Diego to LAX.
Rent a car from companies like Avis or Hertz and hop on and off at LAX. This is called a one-way rental car.
Round trip rentals can save you hundreds of dollars by renting from an offsite non-airport location, but one-way rentals are cheaper at the airport than at the non-airport location. Don’t forget to fill up.
Amtrak Thruway Bus Routes
I am traveling from San Diego to LAX by Uber or Lyft. Yes, you can carpool from San Diego to LAX.
It has some drawbacks. First, Uber or Lyft may not be available in your area. You must request a taxi at least 30 minutes before departure.
Uber prices vary depending on where you pick up in San Diego. Like Amtrak, the closer you get to LAX, the cheaper it gets.
