The premier urban university overlooking the Mississippi in the Midwest, SIUE serves more than 13,000 students in undergraduate and graduate programs. A few years ago, SIUE had a local media streaming solution. Matthew Schmitz, associate director of online and blended learning, said the solution worked, but had many drawbacks, as the interface was not easy to use, the community could not upload content and it was a “heavy burden” on the public. the institution’s Information Technology Services (ITS) department.
The facility began looking for a comprehensive media storage solution, but shortly after the acquisition and transition to a new platform, the company announced that it would no longer offer the video solution as a commercial product.
The ITS Learning Design and Technology (IDLT) team created a committee representing academic departments as well as Blackboard administrators, support staff, power users, and others to evaluate the new video streaming and content management systems. “We started looking at different solutions, and this was the one that met all of our needs internally, for our faculty and students,” Schmitz said.

Despite the challenges with previous vendor export files, “the ease of use helped with the migration,” Schmitz said: “We did a lot of prep work and training as needed, so people had no trouble using it once it shipped.
Laura Million, an instructional designer in charge of on-demand training for the university’s technology products, said the instructors were happy. Faculty use it to easily record and edit videos, add subtitles, and integrate quizzes.
“The most important thing for us is the subtitles,” noted Albat. “Now we have automatic subtitling and generating subtitles is not an extra step. This is 100 percent the best feature. Editing was a bonus. The interactivity with videos and quizzes that automatically integrate with Blackboard is great, and many instructors also use the “percentage used” feature.
Instructors also appreciate the ability to customize their video feed using lecture capture. Video feeds can be added or removed, and students can set feeds to watch the lecture and view content in a way that suits them. it also automatically generates indexes and search transcripts.

“It has increased the professionalism of the creation and editing that instructors can do,” said instructional designer Pamela Williams. “They can spend more time on content than on accessibility issues, and they can spend time being subject matter experts.”
