After World War II, business interests in the Metro-East area (i.e., the city of St. Louis east of the Mississippi River) demanded the expansion of public higher education closer to the workforce. The closest public institution was Southern Illinois University (SIU) in Carbondale, more than 100 miles to the southeast. Although SIU in 1949 opened a small outpost in nearby Belleville, it soon became clear that additional capacity was needed. 1957 of the Southwestern Illinois Council of Higher Education. the report acknowledged pressure from the business community on local educational options, which indicated the need for a public four-year institution in the Metro-East.

In a quick report, SIU purchased facilities for 800 students, but enrolled nearly 4,000 students in two years. In order to adapt to this growth, in 1960 SIU acquired 2,660 acres of farmland with good highway access. Plans for the entire satellite campus began with a conference called Environmental Planning-Edwardsville Campus. Hellmuth, Obata, and Kassabaum were hired to design the campus, and in 1963, the earth was destroyed. The first two buildings were opened in 1965. in the fall, but construction continued at a steady pace throughout the 1960s and 1970s. The completeness and isolation of the campus plan, with its hilltop location, inner quadrangle and planned sky bridge connections, owes much to the emerging architectural ideas of the early 1960s: the desire to create new ways of social interaction that would benefit all people. the latest technological achievements.

A long drive leads to the hilltop town. The main campus, or Stratton Quadrangle, faces east around a central landscaped and paved community. The six original academic and administrative buildings are a perfect combination of oversized brick service towers, detailed concrete walls and large plate windows. The buildings have a perfect balance of scale, sufficient to accommodate a large student body, with more domestic details, including concrete balconies, deep overhangs, proportioned windows and entrances recessed into tall, red-brick towers. Their clear details and simple materials reflect the influence of Louis Kahn’s newly constructed Richards Medical Research Building and Goddard Laboratories (1957-1961, 1961-1964) at the University of Pennsylvania.
The Morris University Center, opened in 1967, is a good example of the scale and detail of the quadrangle. The glass entrance is flanked by two cleanly faced rectangular brick towers. Both sides are given the width of two-story wings with deep overhangs and balconies, the concrete surfaces of which are blown with a large infill. Full-height windows on the first and second floors offer views of the landscape and the nearby Lower Mississippi River.
The well-designed campus is complemented not only by architectural excellence, but also by mature landscaping throughout the common areas.

Case Study Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Uses Video Platform to Deliver Quality Media Experience to Over 13,000 Students
The premier urban university overlooking the Mississippi in the Midwest, SIUE serves more than 13,000 students in undergraduate and graduate programs. A few years ago, SIUE had a local media streaming solution. Matthew Schmitz, associate director of online and blended learning, said the solution worked, but had many drawbacks, as the interface was not easy to use, the community could not upload content and it was a “heavy burden” on the public. the institution’s Information Technology Services (ITS) department.
The facility began looking for a comprehensive media storage solution, but shortly after the acquisition and transition to a new platform, the company announced that it would no longer offer the video solution as a commercial product.
The ITS Learning Design and Technology (IDLT) team created a committee representing academic departments as well as Blackboard administrators, support staff, power users, and others to evaluate the new video streaming and content management systems. “We started looking at different solutions, and this was the one that met all of our needs internally, for our faculty and students,” Schmitz said.

“The biggest draw for our faculty was ease of use. That was a top priority,” said Jennifer Albat, instructional designer.
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) is a nationally recognized university that provides students with a quality education that changes the lives of all who seek something better. Located on 2,660 acres of beautiful forest, above the bluffs overlooking the rich natural beauty of the lower Mississippi River and just a short drive from downtown St. Louis. Louis, SIUE’s campus is home to a diverse student population of more than 13,000.
SIUE provides undergraduate and graduate degree programs spanning the arts, sciences, nursing, education, health, human behavior, business, and engineering. The Schools of Dentistry and Pharmacy offer the first professional doctorates in dentistry (DMD) and pharmacy (PharmD). Doctoral programs in nursing practice and educational leadership are available. SIU Carbondale offers collaborative doctoral programs in history, environmental resources and policy, engineering science, and computer science.
Due to the timing of the release of SIUE’s previous video platform, SIUE only had one calendar year to choose a new solution and migrate all content before the start of the semester. “It was a very short period of time. There wasn’t much room for error,” Schmitz said.

Despite the challenges with previous vendor export files, “the ease of use helped with the migration,” Schmitz said: “We did a lot of prep work and training as needed, so people had no trouble using it once it shipped.
Laura Million, an instructional designer in charge of on-demand training for the university’s technology products, said the instructors were happy. Faculty use it to easily record and edit videos, add subtitles, and integrate quizzes.
“The most important thing for us is the subtitles,” noted Albat. “Now we have automatic subtitling and generating subtitles is not an extra step. This is 100 percent the best feature. Editing was a bonus. The interactivity with videos and quizzes that automatically integrate with Blackboard is great, and many instructors also use the “percentage used” feature.
Instructors also appreciate the ability to customize their video feed using lecture capture. Video feeds can be added or removed, and students can set feeds to watch the lecture and view content in a way that suits them. it also automatically generates indexes and search transcripts.

“It has increased the professionalism of the creation and editing that instructors can do,” said instructional designer Pamela Williams. “They can spend more time on content than on accessibility issues, and they can spend time being subject matter experts.”
“With the pandemic, we saw the sense of expanding beyond the four walls of the classroom and using technology to meet the learning needs of students. There are many advantages whether the course is delivered in an in-person format, a hybrid format, or an asynchronous online format.
Students learning about multimodal transportation now have video and caption mapping for each video. They can interact with the content through a commenting feature that instructors can use to highlight specific parts of the content, and students can provide comments directly in the video. “The quiz time and reflection points and their intentional inclusion are useful resources for students,” Schmitz shared.
“Students have the option to download the transcripts and use the version that works best for them – read the transcript or watch the video, and if students don’t have access to the video for any reason, they have and still have the text file.” the ability to learn,” said Albats.

The IDLTS team noted that the subtitle feature “learns to listen to the speaker” and produces accurate transcriptions. “The AI aspect is very impressive. It’s fast and easy for instructors to teach how to edit transcripts,” said Angie Beyer, Instructional Designer. “With the pandemic, we saw the sense of expanding beyond the four walls of the classroom and using technology to meet the learning needs of students. There are many advantages whether the course is delivered in an in-person, hybrid, or asynchronous online format.
Even with constant updates, it remains an easy-to-use and easy-to-maintain product, the team said. All instructors feel comfortable using the tools, regardless of access to scaffolding levels, advanced mode, and other features.
