More than seven months after Covid-19 delayed the start of a new flight between San Diego and Hawaii, Southwest Airlines debuted the long-awaited nonstop route on Wednesday.

The new flight, which was supposed to start in April this year, was postponed indefinitely in March due to a sharp drop in demand due to the coronavirus pandemic. The decision to launch the new flight comes as Hawaii opened up its tourism economy only last month. Visitors are no longer required to self-quarantine for 14 days upon arrival, but must provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test.

A new Southwest flight departs San Diego at 8:00 a.m. daily and Honolulu at 12:45 p.m. daily.

“We have been anticipating this route for months and welcome Southwest’s new daily service to Honolulu,” said Kimberly Baker, president and CEO of the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority. “There is always a demand for a convenient trip to San Diego and Honolulu, and each city has a military presence, a desire to visit friends and family. We appreciate Southwest’s investment in our city as they continue to add Hawaii to San Diego’s list of non-stop markets.

Nonstop flights to Maui were also scheduled to begin last April, but there is no new start date for that route. According to Southwest Airlines, it is no longer on the airline’s schedule, and will now last until next April.

Southwest’s flight to Oahu began the same day the airline increased the frequency of other flights from San Jose, Sacramento and Oakland to Hawaii and California. That now returns the schedule to pre-pandemic levels, Southwest spokesman Brad Hawkins said.

Southwest Airlines Expands Service To Hawaii From Sd

Southwest is not the first airline to fly nonstop from San Diego Airport to Hawaii. Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines also offer several nonstop flights. However, due to the pandemic, the airport lost all nonstop service to Hawaii between April and June. Hawaiian Airlines was the first to resume daily service to Honolulu on July 16. Alaska followed suit on Aug. 1, San Diego airport spokeswoman Sabrina Lopiccolo said.

Earlier this month, Alaska further expanded its service by restoring nonstop service to the remaining three Hawaiian islands: Maui, Kauai and the Big Island. With those changes and the debut of Southwest flights, San Diego is now home

While it is not known how full these flights to Hawaii are, they are lower than before the pandemic, due in part to concerns about the spread of the virus and the decision by airlines to block center seats. For Southwest, this practice ends after November 30.
