Throughout its history, the Wright Amendment has been a cornerstone of Southwest Airlines’ highly successful operations. During its nearly 43 years of service, Southwest became the largest domestic carrier in the United States, serving only Dallas, Houston and San Antonio. But since 1979, operations outside of Texas and its neighboring states have been severely restricted. That will all change later this year when most of the rest of the Wright Amendment is repealed. , was freed to fly to Southwest. Any domestic flight he likes.

Prior to its cancellation in 2006, airline service from Dallas Love Field (DAL) was limited to a handful of states. Initially, flights were permitted only to the four neighboring states of Texas. Additionally, connecting tickets cannot be sold outside of these states. Over the years this boundary expanded to include Alabama, Mississippi, Kansas and Missouri from the mid-1990s to the mid-2000s. Finally, at the end of 2006, they passed a repeal. Effective immediately, the repeal allowed connecting tickets beyond the perimeter imposed by the Wright Amendment. It was also granted on 13 October 2014, eight years after the effective date of the repeal. Instead of repealing the amendment, the number of gates to be used as DAL was limited to 20. Also, only flights to US destinations are permitted.

Southwest To Expand 2 Houston Routes, Add San Diego Hawaii Flights

In preparation for the full repeal of the Wright Amendments, Southwest Airlines announced this morning that new routes from Dallas will begin this fall. In total, it has announced 15 new destinations in addition to the 16 it currently serves. However, not all changes happen at once. Instead, Southwest is taking a two-tiered approach to adding new destinations. First added are flights to Southwest’s five largest focus cities. Baltimore (BWI), Denver (DEN), Las Vegas (LAS), Orlando (MCO) and Chicago Midway (MDW) will add nonstop flights on October 13. The second round will be added on November 2 with 10 more flights. Three of those will be top 10 cities in the Southwest: Atlanta (ATL), Phoenix (PHX) and Los Angeles (LAX). New York City’s LaGuardia Airport (LGA) and Washington DC’s Reagan National Airport (DCA) will also receive new service. Southwest had the last take-off and landing slots at both airports. Southern California will also see flights to San Diego (SAN) and Santa Ana-John Wayne Airport (SNA) in addition to LAX flights. Meanwhile, Florida is home to Tampa International Airport (TPA) and Ft. Lauderdale International Airport (FLL) added above MCO flights. The Nashville, Tennessee (BNA) airline will round out 15 new routes.

Today’s announcement only indicates which routes will be serviced. A further announcement regarding the actual flight schedule will be made in May. The airline gave no indication of how many flights each new city would see per day. Of course, these new flights don’t come without making cuts elsewhere. At least some flights between Dallas and several Wright-area cities are expected to be canceled. These cities have served as connection points for the past 8 years, allowing Southwest to serve Dallas indirectly with flights across the country. With longer non-stop flight distances now an option, a large portion of this connectivity market is expected to disappear. Passengers will soon be able to fly non-stop from their origin or connect to a larger city. However, Southwest has stated that the impact on these cities is expected to be minimal.
