“We’re not used to anything here,” said Westmoreland, sitting in a hospital gown in the new X-ray room at St. Joseph’s in Westgate. “Every hospital was a journey.”
Hospitals and related services are opening or expanding across the region as healthcare companies fill an underserved market. Projects are underway at Estrella West Phoenix Medical Center, St. Joseph’s in Glendale, Cancer Centers of America and West Valley Hospital, both in Goodyear, and the new rehabilitation hospital in Surprise.

“We delivered over 4,000 babies last year, and we plan to do even more this year,” Krempotik said.
Earlier this year, the 4-year-old Cancer Centers of America made progress on a $16 million expansion at its Western Regional Medical Center in Goodyear, with more construction projects on the drawing board.

This expansion increased the number of inpatient hospitals from 24 to 38 and provided space for more rooms.

West Valley Hospital’s $27 million expansion will include 32 private rooms, two surgical suites and a new construction tower with 7,800 square feet of “shell space,” according to executives.

Later this year, Dallas-based Cobalt Medical Partners will open a 40-bed rehabilitation hospital at the northeast corner of Bell and Dysart roads in Surprise. City officials have waived $160,000 in construction and permitting fees for a $15 million investment in the growing city.
Cobalt CEO Richard Fisk said the rehabilitation hospital expects to serve veterans, athletes, first responders and those who have suffered head trauma.
Surprise Mayor Sharon Wolcott said the project will add 125 good-paying jobs at the hospital, and will include more construction work before that.
