As an instructor at the U.S. Army Infantry School, Phil teaches leadership, tactical and operational arts and science, organizational management, and physical fitness development. At the United States Military Academy (West Point), he served as the university’s psychological counselor responsible for the development of personal leadership of cadets individually and in groups. Phil has twenty-eight years of service, commanding at the company and field level as a platoon leader, two company commanders, and as a battalion commander. Phil served on the General Officers’ Staff as Assistant Corps Logistics Command, Chief of Operations at the division and battalion level for the 101st Airborne Division, and as Assistant Chief of Operations at I Corps Headquarters. At West Point, he served as deputy garrison commander (assistant city manager). He also held several managerial positions at brigade and company level.

In the years 1998-2009, Robert was an Administrator in the Department of Student Affairs and Registration Management (Senior Director of Health and Counselling), and also served as a lecturer in the College of Pedagogy and Vocational Studies in the Department of Teacher Education and the Department of Information Technology and Administrative Management. This study examined the effect of despotic leadership (DL) on employee job satisfaction (JS), using self-efficacy (SE) as a mediating variable and leader-member exchange (LMX) as a moderating variable. Based on the theory of social learning and social exchange, our study proposes a research model. In this model, despotic leadership affects employee job satisfaction both directly and indirectly through personal effectiveness and leader-member exchange. We used the questionnaire analysis method to collect the data. The data was collected from employees of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) located in Guangdong Province, PRC. A pilot test was conducted with 20 participants with similar demographics to the final sample to test the usability of the questionnaire. We distributed 500 surveys to the target group. A total of 230 usable questionnaires were returned, resulting in a response rate of 53%. To evaluate the proposed relationships within a theoretical framework, we used SPSS and AMOS. The results of this study confirmed that despotic leadership has a negative impact on employee job satisfaction. In addition, the results of this study indicate that self-efficacy has a mediating effect between tyrannical leadership and employee job satisfaction. Similarly, the results also confirm that LMX has a moderating effect between despotic leadership and employees’ self-efficacy. We therefore conclude that the community understands the mechanism of despotic leadership, identifies a mechanism for successfully dealing with its negative effects, extends relevant research into the antecedent variable of self-efficacy, and provides practical enlightenment projects for retaining and hiring people.
China has experienced dramatic industrialization and economic development over the past three decades. As a result, over the last three decades, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have played an essential role in industrialization and economic development, as they provide about 80% of jobs in China [1]. However, compared to the corporate sector, SMEs tend to have low wages and a high level of toxic work environment due to despotic leadership [2]. Since low wages and a toxic work environment demotivate employees, which affects their job satisfaction, many previous studies have shown that despotic leadership in SMEs has a negative impact on employee job satisfaction [3, 4, 5].
