Beyond The Curriculum
ESS has a podcast for college students called The (Not So) Secret Guide to Becoming an Engineer at Berkeley. We release new podcasts throughout the summer, covering topics such as how to choose courses for your first semester or what resources and support at ESS to help you get the most out of your time at Berkeley. Services are available. You’ll also hear from students about what it takes to make a successful transition to Berkeley.
After accepting your offer of admission you will complete Golden Bear Advising (GBA) in June. GBA is an interactive online program that will introduce you to life at UC Berkeley, provide information about campus-wide activities, and guide you through CalCentral to your online portal for course registration, grant information, and more.
As part of GBA, you will also complete an online college orientation where you will meet with your student services advisor, learn about your college and major requirements, and select your first semester courses to prepare for July 11 and July class enrollment. 13 for first year students.
From August 17 to August 21 you will participate in Golden Bear Orientation (GBO), a comprehensive orientation program to welcome all new students to the Berkeley campus. During the GBO, the College will organize several events and will send you details of GBO and College events in the coming months.

For more information and support resources, contact Student Services by email or stop by 230 Bechtel Center on campus. We are here to help!
Please note: Freshmen may not meet with an ESS advisor after Golden Bear advising. The 2023 master’s degree in financial engineering was asked to work together and use finance to solve the biggest global problems: from pandemics to climate change.
Commencement speaker Ben Meng, MFE 03, executive president and vice president, Asia Pacific, head of global private equity and executive sponsor of sustainability at Franklin Templeton, asked the class to use financial careers to change lives for the better. “Do good and do good at the same time,” said Meng, former chief investment officer of the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS). During the Covid-19 pandemic, the private and public sectors came together, Meng said, and through a combination of innovation and capital, the world faced the crisis.

He also asked the graduates to build on the relationships they have built with their loved ones, the Haas and Berkeley network and each other in the MFE program, noting that “a healthy support system increases the likelihood of success.”
During the ceremony in Anderson Auditorium, Berkeley Haas Dean Ann Harrison said 80 MFE graduates will join alumni who are using what they learned at Haas to benefit the world.
“We have MFE students at the highest levels of the financial system,” said Harrison, who presented the degrees to MFE program director Jacob Gallis. “You will be the next generation of highly valued analysts, thinkers, advisors and contributors.” Continuing your education is a solid investment in your future and the decision to pursue a graduate degree is an important one. Fees and Tuition Annual Estimated Cost of Attendance for the 2022-2023 Full-Time Program*
Tuition, fees and expenses are estimates based on current proposed amounts. Actual tuition, fees and charges are subject to change by the Regents of the University of California and may be affected by state funding cuts. Accordingly, the final accepted grade (and thus the student’s final balance) may differ from the amounts shown. Visit the Registrar’s Office website for the approved fee schedule for the full-time program. Approximate living expenses are given below.

Tuition and fees for the part-time program are $2,200 per unit for the 2022-23 academic year. The per unit fee covers tuition program and campus fees. Health insurance not included. Degree completion is usually two academic years from entry, with up to four years accepted.
Funding the MEng program is usually primarily the responsibility of the student. Therefore, we encourage applicants to investigate all available financing options. We have compiled all the information we have about funding sources on this page, although it is certainly not exhaustive, and applicants are encouraged to do their own research. International students should research funding opportunities in their home countries.
Our Fung Excellence Scholarship and Meng Opportunity Grant are based on the information provided in the Full-time Meng admission application. Admissions decisions do not consider a student’s financial status or ability to pay tuition when offering admission to a program.
All full-time Meng applications are automatically considered for the Fung Excellence Scholarship. This award of merit is given to a subset of candidates with outstanding academic or professional achievements, as determined by departmental faculty appointments. The award covers approximately 25-50% of full-time MEng program tuition and fees. Exact grant amounts are subject to change.
Berkeley Business Academy For Youth
Please complete the scholarship section of the Full-Time Meng online application to be eligible for the scholarship. Students receiving financial aid must demonstrate financial need. Special consideration is given to applicants whose backgrounds and life experiences contribute to a beneficial mix of students and increased educational diversity. Applicants who have limited access to educational resources, who represent geographic diversity, who have faced economic hardship, who have demonstrated exceptional resilience by working long hours to support themselves during their education, or Those who have brought the perspective that they can experience. No applicants may join. A lot is represented within the program. The award covers approximately 25-30% of full-time MEng program tuition and fees. Exact grant amounts are subject to change.
UC Berkeley’s fee payment plan allows you to pay your semester fees every five months. Interested applicants can read more here.
Federal financial aid, in the form of loans, is available to graduate students who are US citizens or permanent residents. To apply, file for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) anytime after January 1. The FAFSA is also used to determine eligibility for need-based scholarships and departmental grants. UC Berkeley’s FAFSA institution code is 001312. You can apply for help before you are accepted to Berkeley.
UC Berkeley participates in the Federal Direct Loan Program, a federally funded credit-based program for US citizens and permanent residents. A combination of subsidized and non-subsidized loan funds can borrow up to $20,500 annually. Students looking to borrow more than $20,500 can also use a federal Grade Plus loan.

The UC President’s Office has compiled a comprehensive list of preferred donors with fixed-rate options, variable-rate options, and interest-paying (while in school) options. The selection process considered the needs of our students in the categories of price, service and technology. International students will need a US co-signer in most cases.
International students are eligible for Fung Excellence Scholarships and Meng Opportunity Grants, but not for loans through US federal financial aid. Most international students will be responsible for the full cost of attendance for a one-year program, and will need to plan carefully to ensure adequate financial resources.
International students are encouraged to visit the Berkeley International Office Financial Aid page and take advantage of the resources it provides. Students are encouraged to carefully consider all loan options available to them.
The Cal Veteran College Fee Waiver, a state-funded education benefit for dependents of disabled veterans, can be used for most programs at UC Berkeley. For more information, visit the Registrar’s Office website.

The Master of Engineering program participates in VA’s Yellow Ribbon Program (YRP). Students who believe they are eligible for 100% post-9/11 GI Bill benefits (also known as Chapter 33) may be considered. The Yellow Ribbon Program provides funding to cover the difference between in-state and out-of-state tuition.
