Ms Marriott said 300,000 international students wanted to move to the UK in 2019, with that number almost doubling this year.
As a result, Kenyans wishing to travel to the UK to study, work or as tourists are advised to apply six weeks in advance.
“The six weeks starts from the day you go to the visa application centre, not when you fill the forms online,” explained the high commissioner.
However, Ms Marriott urged Kenyans to secure the right documents as this would help speed up the decision-making process.

Most people who come to work in the UK do so on a Tier 2 visa, sometimes called a long-term work visa. The Tier 2 category includes many employees who are in the UK for internal transfers, including some religious leaders and athletes. However, most non-EU workers are covered by a regular work visa.
The Tier 2 General Visa is for all skilled workers who are already employed. So, you need a sponsorship certificate from your employer to apply. You can come to the UK for 5 years and 14 days on a Tier 2 general visa. You are also allowed to enter the UK up to 14 days before the official start of your employment contract, which gives people time to find accommodation and settle in.
The UK Standard Visitor Visa has replaced several other visa categories, including the previously existing Business Visitor Visa. If you are coming to UK for business meetings, conferences, training, research, funding and many other business related activities, this visa is for you. This differs from the Tier 2 General visa, the holder of which is not allowed to work and earn money in the UK. This too is for a very short period of time. Generally, a standard visitor visa only allows you to stay for 6 months. However, there are some exceptions, including a 12-month stay for research academics.
Tier 5 visas are for temporary workers. This includes people who do charitable work, creative or sporting activities and some religious activities. This includes those between the ages of 18 and 30 who want to work during holidays.

Working holiday visas are offered as part of the Youth Mobility Scheme. There is a limit to the number of visas issued each year. This visa option allows its holders to travel and work on a short-term and seasonal basis. This way, you don’t have to save up all the money you need to support yourself before you go, like with other types of visas. The visa application fee is £244.
Unlike many other visas, you can apply up to six months before you plan to travel, as opposed to the standard three months. Decisions are usually made very quickly, within 15 days on average.
People who want to move to the UK to set up a business need a Tier 1 Entrepreneur visa. This visa has strict requirements. Applicants must submit their business plan, investment funds of at least £50,000 and evidence of personal savings to support themselves in the UK. This visa does not allow its holder to pursue any other form of employment. You are only allowed to work on your own business.
The UK visa fee structure depends on the type of visa you are applying for and your nationality. To give you an idea of the costs, a Tier 2 visa costs £610. Those applying for a Tier 2 visa in an area with a shortage of skilled workers pay slightly less at £464.

As with all visa applications, the sooner you apply, the better. You can apply for a visa up to three months before you start working in the UK. Applications will be processed through your nearest British Embassy or High Commission. Processing time is approximately three weeks, but may take longer for certain nationalities. Applications are usually processed more quickly if they are made in a Commonwealth country such as Canada or New Zealand. This is because Commonwealth High Commissions are generally larger than the average embassy and therefore have more staff to process cases.
All UK work visa applications start online. However, to get the biometric residence permit required for some visas, you need to visit the nearest authorized visa center to register your fingerprints. They will also take your photo. If you are already in the UK and need to change or extend your visa, you can apply locally. No need to leave the country. If you need supporting documents for your visa on arrival in the UK, you usually have ten days to do so.
No matter where you work abroad, you can be guaranteed one thing: paperwork! Before traveling abroad to the UK or applying for a UK work visa, you will need to provide supporting documents. You can usually expect to show your current passport (which must have a blank page to stick the visa), proof of sufficient funds to support yourself and support from your employer.
