We offer basic education and three minor programs in English. We also offer three graduate programs: an MFA in Creative Writing, an MA in English, and a combined MFA/MA degree. Alaska’s Engineering Colleges Prepare To Slash Programs, Lay Off Faculty
English major and minor programs prepare students to read, write, and teach. Students are encouraged to engage with our dynamic faculty, take responsibility for their curriculum, and collaborate with their literary peers.
The MFA in Creative Writing offers tracks in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. The MA in English includes courses in world literature, literary theory and compositional pedagogy. The MFA/MA program combines courses in creative writing and literary analysis.

Three Minute Thesis (3mt)
Detailed examination form and defense of dissertation, reports on project defense should be submitted within 10 days of completion of examination/defense.
Advising Committee reports are due by May 15 of each year for those admitted in the summer or fall semester. Payment is due no later than December 15 of each year for those admitted in the spring semester. If necessary, an extension can be requested.
Progress for Undergraduate (Masters and PhD) forms must be submitted at least one semester before you plan to graduate. Ph.D. Students have to clear written comprehensive test before submitting progress to application form.
The application form is submitted to Graduate Services, a division of the Office of the Registrar. Upon receipt, Graduation Services will perform a degree audit and notify the student of the remaining requirements for graduation.

Alaska is a great maritime nation, from its fishing fleets to the volume of maritime trade through its vast, cold seas.
Now, a new master’s program in ocean policy offered by the University of Alaska Fairbanks will target students who go on to study the complex web of interactions that shape the ocean world.
“I’ve been working on it since 2006, when I was appointed to this position as the Ted Stevens Professor of Ocean Policy,” Keith Gridle said in an interview at the National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration’s Lena Point Research Complex on the UAF campus. . “It takes years to lay the groundwork.”
University Of Alaska Regents Cut 39 Programs Across The System
Tough financial times for the university and the state since the mid-2000s have hampered the program’s growth, Griddle said. UA President Pat Pitney and UAS Chancellor Karen Carey were influential in getting the program started in earnest in the late 2020s, Griddle said, because he took the development from theory to reality.
“I’m really excited about this program. I think there’s a huge need for students to get this education, especially with climate change,” Carey said in a phone interview. “We’re a lot smaller than Fairbanks. They have more expertise. It makes a lot more sense to do it as a joint project.
The marine policy program will be the second joint project between UAF and UAS, Carey said, following the undergraduate fisheries program.
“They saw that they wanted to make the program something between UAF and Southeastern,” Griddle said. “It’s something the Regents have been pushing for a long time.”

From the US Coast Guard to subsistence fishing, commercial fishing to shipping, cruise ships to aquaculture, Alaska is inextricably tied to the great ocean.
“Our oceans and rivers go to places where our roads don’t, and we carry things we can’t ship by air,” Griddle said. “We are heavily connected to the Sea Empire.”
“We will work hard to get our Alaska Native students involved in this program,” Carey said. “We want them to get involved and shape the politics of the future according to their own heritage and culture. We hope it will be a combination of Western science and an inclusive Alaska Native perspective.”

The program can be completed remotely and takes approximately one year full-time. Gridle said many professionals who work for agencies such as the Alaska Department of Fish and Game or the Coast Guard would be interested.
“I don’t know how many (students) will end up in the class in the fall. Some are definitely considering the spring,” Griddle said. “There is a lot of enthusiasm. Half of the people I have been in contact with are members of ADFG.

Several organizations have come forward to support the development of the project, including Fish and Game, Coast Guard District 17, NOAA, the Alaska Seafood Marketing Agency, the Pacific Seafood Processors Association, the Juneau Economic Development Council and the McKinley Research Group. All of these institutions are very different, griddle, but the ocean principle is central to all of their existence, and students can tailor their degree to their liking.

“Because of the range of courses and the number of collaborative projects, students can adapt it in many different directions,” Griddle said. “There are completely different paths you can take to write for your degree.”
Marine policy analysts can find positions in government and commercial agencies throughout Alaska, Griddle said, championing the state’s ties to the ocean.
“It’s going to take time. There’s not one group that wants to build it. We’ve been stronger in the state in the life sciences and geosciences than in the policy area,” Griddle said. “I think most of them stay in the state. I think our master’s degree in fisheries is an example of that. I think 80% of our fisheries graduates stay in the state.
Fishing vessels operating out of Alaska catch 50-60% of all fish in the U.S., Griddle said. Alaska is between the sixth and eighth largest fishery in the world, depending on the year, Gridle said. The Ocean Policy Master’s will allow students to explore that relationship with the ocean. Vision: Transforming the Academy through Indigenous knowledge systems and worldviews.
