WHAT: The University of Iowa’s first residence hall celebrates a milestone — 100 years of housing and development leaders and students.
Career Hall was built in 1914 to alleviate UI housing shortages for female students. It was named after Amos Noyes Currier and his wife Celia Moore Currier. Amos served the university as a professor, professor, dean of liberal arts, and interim president during his tenure at Iowa in the second half of the 19th century. Celia teaches math and Latin. When it opened, Career Hall housed about 150 women. Today it has 618 students.
The Career Hall’s 100th anniversary celebration will take place on Sunday, Nov. 9, through Thursday, Nov. 13. The night will feature a variety of activities, including a lively discussion with family members of Amos and Celia Carrier, historians, artists and former employees. and residents share their memories of Career Hall. Students and UI students, staff, and faculty are invited to attend all events free of charge.
TEREK: Currier Hall on the east side of campus was built a century ago at a cost of more than $150,000 to accommodate the growing number of women attending the UI. The original building was the southeast part of the present building. Parts were added to the lodge in 1927, 1939, and 1949. In 1965, ten stories to the west were planned—the project that became Stanley Hall.

When construction on the University of Iowa’s new residence hall is completed in 2015, it will be more than a century since the UI opened its first hall: Quarry, a women’s dormitory, in 1914.

Student housing has changed a lot in the last 100 years. A 1918 brochure in the quarry reads: “The rooms are lighted by electricity, and supplied with hot and cold water, except those upstairs.” In 1966, breakfast was only 65 cents, lunch set you back 85 cents, and dinner fifty cents. Until 1968, men and women lived in separate buildings on opposite sides of the Iowa River.
The new hall, now known as West Campus Residence Hall, will be located between Rye and Hillcrest. The residence halls were first opened on campus in 1968. The floor plan invites 26 to 28 students to live in communities based on common academic goals and interests in two rooms.
“When I started working in this field about 26 years ago, there was a push to call dormitories ‘halls of residence,'” said Kate Fitzgerald, director of academic health and academic programs for University Housing and Dining. “That’s because dorms are where students sleep, and residence halls are where they live and grow. It sounds corny, but it’s true. Most learning in college happens outside of the classroom. Students spend a lot of time in the residence halls, and they want simple amenities.”

The first building was in the southeast part of the present building, where about 150 women lived. Parts were added to the lodge in 1927, 1939, and 1949. (In 1965, ten stories to the west were planned—the project became StanleyHall.)
The university’s first residence hall was named after Amos Carrier, who served as a professor, lecturer, dean of liberal arts and interim president during his tenure at Iowa in the second half of the 19th century. The name also honors his wife Celia, who studied mathematics and Latin.
Over the years, residents have enjoyed a beauty spot, soda fountain, and formal dinners (before they sang beautifully). Medieval people remember the spring evening conversations of men who lived west across the Iowa River, and there is an unconfirmed legend of three suicides on the fourth floor when their roommates discovered they had been poisoned.
Today, the Quarry is home to 618 people (it received housing in the 1970s), as well as a fitness center and a childcare center.
Molloy College Freezes Student Tuition For The 2020 21 School Year
Shortly after the quarry was built, the university followed with its first men’s dormitory: The Quadrangle, which was also the first men’s dormitory in the Midwest.
The Quadrangle, a two-story hall on the west side of campus, was originally built at the behest of the U.S. Department of the Army, which asked UI to build barracks for the Student Army Training Corps during World War I. Constructing a permanent structure for use in a dormitory selected by the UI. men after the war. After signing on to the Army in 1918, the UI was able to house 325 people when the building was completed in 1920; another 185 rooms were added in 1925.
The name of the building was chosen by a vote of residents, and the Quad quickly became the center of student activities, with a UI field house as well as a recreational pool and basketball courts. A 1919 brochure called its location “delightful,” and a 1923 ledger said it had the best dance floor in Iowa City. There was also a barbershop and a literary society (known as the Quadwranglers).
In 1942, the Quad was temporarily taken over by the Navy, which leased it as a training school for 1,900 aviation cadets (Hillcrest would be used for the same purpose).

The hall enjoyed its own restaurant from 1956 to 1999, attracting many regular student and staff diners. It closed while the restaurant in Hillcrest was renovated and became the main restaurant for all westerners.
Women were allowed to live in the quad starting in 1969, but in 1975 the UI decided to burn down the northeast corner of the building to save money; this part was in need of renovation and had been vacant since the late 1960s. The southeast wing of the Quad housed freshman counseling from 1979 until the opening of the Pomerant Center.
