An MBA, four different concentrations, all 100% online. It is a 100% online Master of Business Administration program at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC).
Closer To Home
Over the course of four semesters (full-time) or two years (part-time), students gain practical and strategic business skills through eight core classes, three electives (or concentration courses), and a capstone course. Topics covered include organizational behavior and leadership, marketing, accounting, finance, decision analysis, information systems, economics, and entrepreneurship and all included in the strategic management capstone course.
When taking the program, students can choose a general MBA option without a specific concentration or choose between business analysis, finance or health administration to focus their studies.
“These three concentrations make up one-third of the MBA population,” UTC MBA program director Christine Estoye told Poets&Quants. “People tell me that they can immediately adapt and use these principles. Many people in the concentration are doing work related to their work or have now moved into a role that requires this knowledge to help them do their work better and advance in this role.
The business analytics option is designed to enhance and enhance students’ use of data mining and data analysis techniques. Completing the business analytics concentration requires nine credit hours in three courses: Database and Data Warehousing, Data Mining and Analytics, and Advanced Data Analytics.

The health administration concentration is designed to help students gain the skills they need to become leaders in health care and help influence health policy. The three concentration courses are Essentials of Health Systems Administration, Evidence-Based Management and Health Improvement, and Health Management.
“We have a partnership with the doctoral program in nurse practitioner on campus so that we have clinical staff teaching at least one of the courses and bring more real-world application into the classroom,” Estoye said.
The finance concentration is popular with many students pursuing careers and employers today in the fields of finance and accounting. Topics covered include investment, international finance, and financial markets and institutions.
Finally, the general MBA option allows students more flexibility to customize their experience by enhancing their skills in other general business areas. Students in this course can choose three electives and delve deeper into management, marketing, human resources, leadership, finance, or accounting.

Regardless of the concentration students choose, UTC promises to provide practical and strategic knowledge in operations, accounting, finance, and information management, entrepreneurial skills, and complete degree requirements in 18-24 months.
All of these factors make UTC’s 100% Online MBA unique says Dustin Burton, an alumnus of the program. “It’s really the flexibility you get and the overview you get that makes this program stand out.” The 34-year-old commercial sales assistant in the banking industry spent some of his career as a school teacher and, more recently, worked in retail and restaurant management after being discharged from the military. He enrolled in the MBA program to broaden his business sense and said he chose UTC because of its general business overview, asynchronous format, and consistent position as one of the top 25 online MBA programs.
“You can do what you need to do to protect your life. Go to work, have dinner with your family, then do your homework.”
The program begins with an online student orientation that takes place before registering for the first class. It is a do-it-yourself format on Canvas, which is an online delivery platform for all classes. Orientation takes three to four hours to complete and students can spread it over several days if needed. The goal of the introductory orientation, the school says, is to familiarize students with Canvas, teach them how to navigate the system for upcoming assignments and how to use the discussion board plus basic online etiquette, a review of the school’s honor code, and about that. -campus resources available to individuals.

Another requirement is for those who do not have an academic background in business. Non-business majors must take up to four non-credit online modules – 20-30 hours to complete – to acquire the specific skills the school feels they need to succeed in the program. The subjects covered by the module are economics, statistics, business law, and accounting. All four modules must be completed before the six hours of the online MBA curriculum are complete and are generally prerequisites for the MBA core courses. Students’ transcripts will be reviewed to determine if they have taken undergraduate courses with sufficient background credit and are eligible for exemption.
In order to attract a large number of students who may not be able to attend a class session at a given time, the school has made the entire Online MBA curriculum asynchronous. Courses in the spring and fall semesters last 14 weeks and in the summer there are six weeks with assignments and deadlines to meet each week. The design is cohort-based, but not closed, so students can choose to reduce their course load if necessary.
