However, they require a significant degree of independence and may not be the best fit for every student. There are also many affordable direct and third-party programs that are not significantly more expensive than tuition, Room and board at UT.

Out-of-state students should consider direct or UT-related study abroad programs instead of exchanges. These programs are often less than the cost of attending UT.
Although we strongly encourage students to study abroad for a semester or academic year, we recognize that some students will prefer to study abroad in programs of shorter duration. With that in mind, the Programs Abroad office offers much shorter summer or summer programs. Many of these programs are very affordable, but be aware that scholarships and other financial aid may not apply to programs that are less than a semester long. This often makes summer programs more expensive in terms of pocket money than semester programs. This award is $6,000 per academic year. It consists of $3,000 from the State of Tennessee and $3,000 from the University of Tennessee. Note that money coming from UT may consist of merit-based and/or need-based grants. The $3,000 will not stack on their prizes.
