What Makes Me So Sleepy All The Time

What Makes Me So Sleepy All The Time – You want to sleep all day. You fell asleep watching Netflix. But when you sleep, you wake up.

According to sleep medicine specialist Philip Gehrman, associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania, lying in bed unable to sleep is often called conditioned or learned arousal. It’s one of the most common sleep problems, and experts believe it happens because something in your sleep environment tells your brain to “wake up” or wake you up instead of going to sleep.

“If a person is a good sleeper, he will sleep in bed every night. So when they go to bed, it creates an automatic sleep response,” says Gehrman. “But if you can’t toss and turn and fall asleep at night, your body associates it with your bed instead.”

Excessive Sleepiness: Causes, Symptoms, And Treatment

There are some obvious things that can cause you to toss and turn, and it’s one thing to think about it before you try to go down. It’s another thing to use a laptop in bed, which creates the idea that the bed creates space for work or entertainment.

But even people with generally good sleep habits can be thrown into this sleep cycle after a stressful event, a job loss, or the death of a loved one. According to Ronald Cherwin, director of sleep at the University of Michigan. Rule Center. Worrying disrupts your sleep, and this pattern can associate the brain with waking up from sleep, such as using a laptop.

According to sleep experts, the most effective form of treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia, or CBT-I. This usually involves regular visits to the clinician and aims to change your sleep patterns and habits. “A big part of what we teach people is to have a bed to sleep on,” Cherwin said. Sure, you can still have sex in bed, but try to move other activities elsewhere.

So if you can’t sleep, no screen and can’t sleep around. Limiting reading is also a good idea. “If you’ve been lying in bed for 20 minutes or more, get up and do something else,” says Cherwin. Don’t go to bed until you’re really ready to go to sleep.

The Best Foods To Help You Sleep

Cherwin and Gehrman say it may take a while to retrain your brain to see your bed as a place to sleep, but if you find a tiring bedtime routine and stick to it, you should be able to stop the cycle. Most people who use CBT-I attend four to eight sessions, so give it a few weeks before you expect change. If you don’t live near a Cherwin sleep clinic, Cherwin says he’s seen some patients use apps like SHUTi or Sleepio as an at-home treatment option. Regardless of your method, experts say it’s important to follow general sleep tips, such as keeping your bedroom at a comfortable temperature, avoiding coffee and alcohol in the evening, and turning off the lights before bed.

For those who don’t think they have insomnia, Gehrman says staying up until bedtime could be a sign that you’re a night owl who naturally lags behind compared to other people. “Some people want to go to bed at 10, 11, but their bodies are wired and when they want to go to bed, they’ll get a different wind,” Gehrman says. “Then it’s harder to get up in the morning because their bodies think they should still be asleep.”

Fortunately, there are ways to advance your body clock so that you can sleep successfully when you go to bed. An important step, Gehrman says, is to avoid bright light during the first hour of sleep. Light, especially the blue light emitted by computer and phone screens, suppresses your body’s production of melatonin, a chemical that helps you sleep. Another important tip is to wake up regularly so that your body can adjust to your desired rhythm. While this may mean you don’t have to sleep in on the weekend, a regular morning routine is fine if it helps you feel sleepy in the evening.
