When A Loved One Dies Checklist

When A Loved One Dies Checklist – Although not the most pleasant subject to think about, having a detailed list of what to do when a loved one passes can bring great comfort during times of grief and stress. Also, this type of checklist is also important throughout life as a guide to things that can be updated… just in case. Click the image below to view and/or download the checklist.

As you can see, the list is 6 pages long. Let’s break it down into the two most obvious uses.

When A Loved One Dies Checklist

The straightforward idea, as the title suggests, is a checklist for when a family member or loved one has passed. While no list can be perfect in every situation, I believe that many things are covered and, good news, some things will not happen and can be checked immediately.

The best thing about this list is how it’s broken down into time frames. The death of a spouse or loved one is one of life’s biggest events, so it’s the worst time to deal with endless details, but that’s the job. Dividing your list into what you need to do now, this week, this month, the next three months, etc. helps you take the steps you need at the time you need them without overthinking them. A warning for a nice part of the work … some things may require a quick address than you say depending on the situation. For example, a death at the end of the year may require making tax-related decisions sooner. For example, for the year-end death of an IRA owner who has taken Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs), any outstanding RMDs must be taken by December 31.

Another tip at the beginning of the list is to ask a family member or close friend for help. This can help with responsibility break down and / or just have another set of eyes and hands to provide help and wise advice.

Therefore, the level of ease or difficulty in navigating this item will be determined in part by the amount of planning that occurs before death, which leads us to use the rest of the checklist.

While none of us will eliminate all the problems of others facing death, or our illness, we can go a long way to reduce stress by planning ahead. The big things to do before you leave the ground or become paralyzed are:

Checklist For What To Do When Someone Dies

Actually, it’s hard to know where to draw the line between important and less important. There are some things you may not think about, such as online subscriptions ________ that no one knows unless you are on the list of online accounts and passwords. And, when you think about some of these things, you might decide that you don’t need the subscription and save some money!

I’ve shared this list many times over the past few years. Those who have used it have found it very useful in difficult times. They also provide valuable feedback on things that need to be updated based on specific circumstances and the evolving digital environment in which we live. I appreciate those who have given advice and will accept any recommended review so that others can benefit.
